Dio had always been good at chess. So good in fact, that he couldn't remember the last time he lost a game. He had always thought he was a sure winner, and had therefore no reason to turn down Jonathan's friendly offer of a game of chess. How could his adopted brother, who was so childlikely naive and stupid even at the age of 17, ever stand a chance against Dio?
Well, the longer the game went on, the more apparent it became that Dio had underestimated Jonathan.
The longer the game went on, the more Jonathan's little gestures of delight when he ate Dio's chess pieces annoyed him.
Dio was annoyed to the point he considered flipping the board over, but decided to collect himself. He knew he shouldn't let his nerves get the better of him. Instead, he concentrated on Jonathan's technique in the game. It could prove to be useful in the future.
Even when he tried to calm his nerves, he felt the frustration throb in his veins. As an experienced chess player, he could already see that there was nothing he could to to turn the tables.
It didn't take much longer for Dio to be completely cornered.
"Checkmate!" Jonathan let out a victorious yell.
Dio really hoped he couldn't see the way his eye twitched at his voice.
"Well done, JoJo. You had me completely surrounded", he said, giving and exaggerated sigh as he stood up from the chair.
Jonathan stood up.
"Ah, thank you! You were a hard opponent to win", Jonathan said, rubbing his neck with an embarrassed smile on his face.
The smile made the pit of Dio's stomach feel unfomfortable. He hated that smile.
"Yes", Dio said, not really listening as he stared the lips forming the words, "I shall now return to my studies. I trust you to clean up the game, since you were the one who proposed it", he continued, his eyes cold.
His irrotation was getting the better of him, and he didn't want to spend time with the Joestar heir more than was necessary.
He was making his way out of the parlor when he felt a hand grab his, preventing him from moving.
"D-did I do something to offend you?" he heard the concerned voice behind him say.
Dio wasn't too fond of the way Jonathan's hand sent his blood racing for unimaginable reasons.
He casted his friendliest smile on before turning around and facing the brunet.
"Why, of course not. What might lead you to that assumption?" he didn't move his eyes from Jonathan's blue ones.
"I just.. Wanted to make sure. You seemed kind of, off", he let his eyes fall to the floor.
"I am merely tired and I have some studying to do", the bloond explained, yet again.
"R-right... I'll clean up the game", Jonathan said with an unconvinced voice.
With that, Dio left the room.
He avoided Jonathan for almost a week.
