A loud crash of lightening from outside woke Giorno from his nightmare. His chest ached from where his heart pounded harshly against his ribcage, tears threatening to spill over long lashes.
It had felt so real, so terrifying. All nightmares felt like reality in the mind of a five year old, Giorno thought to himself as he slipped from his bed with his ladybug plush tucked safely under his arm.
He felt guilty as he tiptoed down the hall towards his parents' room, the door creaking as he pushed on the wood slightly to slip in.
Papa was fast asleep, his arms curled protectively around his Padre. Padre had gotten home late from work that night, staying late at the law firm he worked at and missed dinner. He must have gotten home sometime after Giorno had fallen asleep, the child remembering the bedtime story his Papa had read to him before tucking him in with a kiss to the forehead.
He probably shouldn't bother them, Giorno thought. Padre worked long hours and was an important lawyer. Papa got to work at home often, his job as an archaeologist and adjunct professor at the university letting him have more time with Giorno.
Giorno shook his head, knowing he couldn't go back to sleep without some form of reassurance from one of them.
"Giorno?" Dio's voice, thick with sleep, called out. "What are you doing up?"
"I had a bad dream," Giorno admitted, tiptoeing to Dio's side. "Can I sleep in here?"
"You're a big boy," Dio tried, blinking sleepily at his son. Giorno's lip quivered, eyes full of tears, and he felt his heart clench at the sight of his son looking so sad. He sighed, pulling the blankets back and waving with the hand that wasn't holding Jonathan's. "Come here,"
Giorno didn't need to wait for him to finish before he clambered up onto the large bed, nestling close to Dio and sniffling. Dio wrapped his free arm around Giorno closely, pressing a kiss to the soft golden locks that were much like his own.
"I had a dream about Mother," Giorno said quietly against his chest, and Dio felt his heart drop to his stomach, protectively holding him a bit closer. "Can I be in between you and Papa?"
Dio shifted to let Giorno lay in the middle of the bed, the stirring rousing Jonathan from his sleep.
"Dio? Gio? What's wrong?" he asked, yawning as he rubbed at his eyes.
"Giorno had a nightmare," Dio explained. "He wants to sleep in here with us,"
"That's fine," Jonathan yawned again, pulling Giorno close. "It's alright, baby. Papa and Padre will keep you safe,"
Giorno nodded, clutching his ladybug to his chest. Dio waited, listening to the sound of his family fall back asleep. Jonathan's deep snoring filled the air once more, Giorno's softer snores like a little melody to his ears.
He knew what Giorno had meant almost immediately after he mentioned his mother, the wicked woman. Dio had fought tooth and nail for full custody after their relationship fell apart, Giorno living with him by the end of his third year of being alive. From the little that Giorno discussed, he knew the woman left him alone for long periods of time when he was barely able to feed himself and had an abusive boyfriend who had dared harm his beautiful child.
Dio laid back down beside Giorno, an arm coming to wrap around him and Jonathan. He wanted Giorno to feel safe, to know his Padre loved him.
He pressed his face into Giorno's back, finding the beat of his heart under his ear a soothing enough lullaby.
His fears would go away the next morning, stumbling into the kitchen to find Jonathan and Giorno in the midst of making breakfast, his son laughing alongside his husband.
