Third Person POV
AJ pulls the strap of her backpack higher as she walks into her new school. She makes her way to the office with her head down, thinking about how much she hated being the new girl.***
Luke hops on his bike quickly, running late for school, as usual. By the time he gets to the school, homeroom is over, and it's ten minutes into first period. With a sigh, he rushes to the office, knowing he's about to get another detention.

AJ's POV
"Hi, how can I help you?" the office lady smiles at me as I walk in."I'm new, can I get my schedule please?" I
"Of course, hun! Last name?"
"Kennedy."
She looks through a couple files before pulling out a slip of paper and handing it to me, "Here you go."
"Thank you so much." Right as I turn to leave, a guy comes rushing in, almost running straight into me.
"Oh shit, I'm so sorry."
Before I can respond, I hear someone clear their throat from behind me. The principal, Ms. Langston, I think, was standing there with an annoyed look on her face.
"Luke Patterson, late again?"
Luke. That's his name.
He doesn't say anything, just rubs the back of his neck while avoiding eye contact with everyone.
"Come on, you know the drill." He groans and trudges to her office. She goes to follow him, but stops and turns to me, "You, stay here for a second." I nod hesitantly, sitting in one of the chairs.
They emerge a few minutes later, and if looks could kill, Luke would've taken out Ms. Langston in a heartbeat. "Alayna, Luke will be showing you around for the remainder of first period." I go to correct her on my name but decide against it, "Sounds good." I grab my stuff and follow Luke out the door.
"Schedule," we both stop walking as he extends his hand out at me.
"How about you ask a little nicer?" I cross my arms.
"Do you want me to show you around or what?"
"If I'm guessing correctly, you get a pass on detention or some shit like that if you showed me around. And if the teacher finds out that you didn't, that means you get detention. Either way, it doesn't affect me," I start retracing my steps back to the office.
"Wait," he grabs my wrist gently, "I really need to get out of this detention."
"Then stop being an asshole and use your manners."
He rolls his eyes, "Can I see your schedule?"
"Now that wasn't so hard, was it?" I give him the slip of paper in my hand. He ignores my comment and starts walking again. I follow behind him while he points out where everything is, ending with my locker.
"There's like five minutes left before next period, so you can put your stuff away if you want," he opens up my locker with the combination that was on the paper.
"Thanks," I slip off my backpack and start emptying it. "Yeah, no problem," he replies, but his mind seemed somewhere else. "You okay? Luke?" "Hm?" he snaps out of his trance, "Yeah, I'm fine." I open my mouth to reply but the bell rings, signaling the end of first period.
"I gotta go, but you can sit with me and my friends at lunch if you want," he starts walking backwards, careful not to hit anyone, "Also, sorry for being a dick." "It's fine, and I might just have to take you up on that offer." I see him smile to himself before turning around.
***
I walk into the cafeteria, searching the crowd for a familiar orange beanie. "Hey Alayna," I jump, hearing a voice from behind me. "Luke, do not sneak up on me like that," I hit him in the arm lightly. He raises his hands up in surrender, "Sorry." "You're fine, and I go by AJ, not Alayna." He nods, "Got it."
I follow him to one of the tables on the far end of the room. "They should be over here soon," he tells me, referring to his friends. I nod, absentmindedly unpacking my lunch.
I feel a slight nudge to my arm, "What?" "There they are," Luke points to three boys, two with dark hair and one with blonde that looks strangely familiar. Once they get to the table, the realization hits me.
"Alex?"
"AJ?"
Alex's POV
"Luke, where the hell have you been?" I look at my best friend, who had just slid into the seat next to me. "Showing around the new girl."I look at him doubtfully, "You're not that nice, so what happened?" He let out a sigh, "First, that was rude and second, Langston let me off the hook if I show her around." I nod slightly, "That makes more sense, you're not that nice."
He smacks my upper arm a little, "I can be nice." I give him another skeptical look. "Seriously, I asked her to sit with us at lunch." I gasp dramatically, "Lukey's finally growing up, only took the entire time I've known you." Rolling his eyes, he sinks into the seat, mumbling something about how nice he is and that I'm an asshole.
***
Reggie, Bobby, and I had finally gotten our lunches and were heading towards our table. Surprisingly, Luke wasn't alone. The girl he'd mentioned had actually taken up his offer. Luke lightly elbows her and points to us, probably telling her who we are. As we get closer, the girl starts to look more and more familiar, but I couldn't figure out why.
"Alex?" Hearing her voice made me finally recognize who she was, "AJ?"
