Festus and I arrived in town just as the sun started to rise. It was a tiny town, with about three buildings that weren't obviously shops. One building had a Kecleon standing outside, and he appeared to be trying to sell something to a Floatzel. The Floatzel walked away, leaving Kecleon high and dry. Festus walked up to the Kecleon. "Hi!" he shouted at the shopkeeper, "I'm Festus. You agreed to get me started on whatever crossed my fancy?"
"Ah, yes, right," the Kecleon muttered, "I've got things here for carpetry, various shops, fo-"
"Adventuring," Festus interrupted
"I've got that too," Kecleon said, "Do you know what sub you want?
"Sub?" I asked, "What's a sub?
Kecleon looked at me quizzically.
"Your friend here," he asked Festus, "He's not very... educated, is he?"
"No, he's not"
"Anyways, a sub-career is what kind of adventuring you'd do, in this case," Kecleon explained, "There's three subs for adventuring. The first is a Rescue Team. They perform services for citizens, typically rescuing when they get stuck in a mystery dungeon. Then there's the Attack Teams. They go hunt down outlaws, wherever they are. Finally, there's the Exploration teams. They do a mix of the other two, but they typically don't stay in one spot for very long. There is, of course, some exceptions. You can also remain neutral, if you want, but people pay more if you've got the sub for the job."
"Exploration," Festus stated, "I want to go see the world, and help people along the way."
Kecleon rummaged through his shelves, and pulled out three badges and three green gems. He grabbed a hammer and inserted the gems into an indent on the front of the badges. He turned one of the badges over and hammered 'Festus' into the back, in Unown. He turned over the other badge. "What's your name?" Kecleon asked me.
"Um," I stammered, unsure whether to choose an alias or keep my name.
"Snake," Festus filled in for me. Kecleon engraved my 'name' on my badge.
"And who's the third?"
Festus' eyes went wide. "I thought you needed two!" he shouted.
"The Adventurer Association decided that three is necessary now. It changed last week."
"Great," Festus groaned, "I don't have another member."
"I-, um, there's, uh, there's someone here." I stuttered, looking up at the figure who had been standing next to me for the past five minutes.
"I'll join you," the towering Fire-type commanded.
