Dream had always had an odd fascination with the stars. He found it amazing how the fragile little dots he saw in the sky were really bright, burning lanterns sprinkled throughout the universe, and the apparitions he saw were only ghosts of their true forms.
It was beautiful to him, in his own way.
The interest first sparked on the night they had built the aquarium.
Dream had been patching up a few areas, placing the last few blocks of glass, and as the sun slipped below the horizon and George poured gallons of water into the tank, a glint caught his eye.
The Northern star.
Captivated, he put away his items and planted himself down on top of the tank, facing the North as stars began to fade into existence.
Wow.
Pinpricks of light glittered against the inky background that was the night sky. If he squinted, he could make out blues and purples and pinks swirling together within the darkness, stars slightly illuminating the background. He could catch the patterns that wove together like cloth, both perfectly intentional and wildly random at the same time.
Dream was absolutely enamored.How... how had he never noticed this?
"What are you looking at?"
Dream tore his gaze from the night sky and turned to his left.
George was sitting at his side, watching him with a confused expression on his face."Uh.. how long have you been there?"
"After I finished pouring the water. I saw you just staring into space and you didn't even notice when I sat down next to you! You good?"
Dream broke eye contact with George sheepishly. "Yeah uh... sorry I kinda zoned out a bit."
He returned his attention to the sky.
"It's just- uh- that I haven't really noticed the sky lately..""How so?"
"Well," Dream said, gesturing up to the vast expanse of space before them, "Have you ever really.. noticed the stars?"
George followed where he was pointing.
"Now that you mention it, I really haven't. Why?""I really think we should appreciate them more, you know? Like we spend all this time doing all this shit like building the farms, and the house, but we never really stop and smell the roses." Dream was now leaning over the edge of the roof, hands on his knees. There was a smile on his face. "We're all so busy all the time... it made me forget to appreciate what we have here."
"George?"
"..."
"You're such a dork," George giggled, pushing his arm.
Dream flushed, embarrassed, "No I'm not, asshole! You're the one with the thing for that fish-"
George pulled away, tactfully ignoring him, and looked back at the sky. "No but seriously, I think I get it. We really need to appreciate all this before it's gone."
"..."
"Damn George, that got dark quick-"
"Oh shut up, Dream-"
It wasn't long before they all started stargazing. Sapnap and George would come along on free nights, but they never really got it like Dream.
Dream began charting the stars, spending many sleepless nights researching and identifying separate stars and constellations that danced in his vision. He doodled stars in his journals, and constantly pestered his two best friends with endless facts and names he had collected through the many abandoned books he had found.
