The hustle bustle of people made a cacophony of sounds, as the family members ran hastily, here there, with sweat beaded foreheads—frantically— trying to assemble the house for the Dholki function at night."Harris? Harris?" Vania called loudly looking into everyroom as she passed.
"Kya hua? kya hua?" He replied stopping midway on the stairs, gathering her attention.
"Kidher ho, yaar?" She half whined, half demanded, because she had been looking for him since forever... Or maybe just 20mins.. Meh... "Mera duppatta le aye?" Vania asked.
"Uh- Maine Haider ko behja hai." He replied with a non-chalant shrug, staring at his phone distractedly.
"Haarrrriiisss!!!" Her horrified scream got him to look up startled. Vania seemed as if she might just pull his hair or just might start crying her self, "maine tum se kaha thaa naa!!" She yelled.
"Yaarr! Toh kiyaa ho gayaaa-" He blinked, surprised by her reaction and began to feel a little guilty for sending Haider when she specifically asked him.. But he had been busy too.
"Harris Tumko kehne ka matlb thaa keh tumheyn le ke ana thaa.. Tum per depend ker rhi thi main.. Haider pe nhi! Tum ko pata hai woh ek kaam seedha nhi kartaa!" She cried, feeling betrayed, "Pehley bhi kisi or ka uthaa ke le aya thaa or mera ghumaa diya tha-"
"Oye! Achaa!! Relax meri maa!! Main dekh leta hun!" exasperated he tried to pacify her before things got out of hand.
What was it with girls and their Obssesion with perfect matching duppata and jewellery he wouldn't know... He only hoped this function ended smoothly... Both Vania and Hania were about to give him gray hair by the end of it.. That was how much they were stressed.
"Harris dafa ho jao...." Vania stomped her foot annoyed, almost turning away as she said "Main nhi baat kar rhi ab-" but he quickly ran down the steps to grab her arm and cut her off saying,
"Khuda kaa wasta hai abhi narazgi kaa time nhi hai, Vani! Main keh raha hun naa abhi khud chala jaoun ga dye waley ke paas!"
She looked up at his face, a deep frown marring his otherwise smooth forehead and tension filling his chocolaty orbs.
It was always the same reaction. He couldn't handle her not speaking to him, as if he couldn't get any work done if she stopped talking.
But he hated when she talked.. then why did he?
Swallowing her emotions she broke away from his stare looking down at her feet, "Nhi choro ab.." She murmured, "Woh Haider laa raha hai tohh..." Vania took a deep breath and settled down.
Convincing herself that Haider wouldn't mess wasn't easy, but it wasn't the right time for any drama either. She could tell he was highly stressed already.
Harris sighed in relief.
"Flowers kaa batao.." she pulled her arm out of his hold discretely, fighting the heat rising to her cheeks, "Khala pooch rahin hain gajrey or gendey ki lariyan kab tak ayen gi?" She changed the subject asking him about the flower decorations.
Harris cleared his throat stepping back, "Bss.." he scratched his neck trying to bring his attention back to work, "Abhi udhr hi jaa raha thaa pata-"
They were interrupted by another voice coming down from above.
"Harris?" Airaa called as she descended the stairs.
Airaa, Aylaa, Kamran uncle and Fatima Aunty were already there along with some other family members. But there presence wasn't much of a help for him. Except for Ayla, none of the family members ever tried to mix with the crowd, always reminding the Abdullah's that they were doing wrong mingling with middle class people such as the Faizan's.
