I saw her again last night And you know that I shouldn't To string her along's just not right If I couldn't I wouldn't But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me
I'm in way over my head Now she thinks that I love her Because that's what I said Though I never think of he But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me
Every time I see that girl You know I want to lay down and die But I really need that girl Don't know why I'm livin' a lie It makes me want to cry

Now most people know this song was inspired by the affair that happened between Michelle and Denny. John and Denny were credited with writing the song, and I always wonder how awkward it must have been to record this, especially since Michelle sings a lot on this song. Usually Cass's voice overpowers Michelle's but it's very noticeable in this song.
I always thought this was Denny's recollection of the affair and that that's what inspired John to write those lyrics. I've watched many documentaries of the Mamas and the Papas and they always seem to gloss over the inspiration for this song, which is understandable. But while trying to dig deeper into the meaning, many people claimed that the following lines were actually about an affair John had with Cass to get back at Michelle and Denny.
"I'm in way over my head Now she thinks that I love her Because that's what I said Though I never think of her"
Apparently John reveals this in a tv interview but I've yet to find the clip so I'm doubtful about it now because I thought John and Cass didn't get along well with one another. But if anyone knows if this mysterious clip does exist, then I would really like to see it, because then it really is a love square.
This song as mentioned before, is HARSH and I absolutely love it. The vocals for this song are just amazing.
