KABOOM!!!
..
.
.
We both turn around to the thunderous sound echoing in the forest. Birds from all around us flap away, their wings making whooshing sounds as they scurry into their hideouts. The forest roars and awakens with the loud boom that comes from the distance we came from.
I glance towards Andre and find him equally shocked, "What was that?"
"Looks like they're here. Come on, move quick."
He turns around and starts cutting through the forest, but this time at a faster pace.
For the next half hour, Andre brisk walks through the jungle, while I run after him, trying my best to not be lost or left behind.
We make it only a little further when we faintly hear rapid thumping sounds coming from behind. Andre kneels and puts his ear to the ground, whereas, I just stand there awkwardly.
"They're not far behind us. We need to move quickly." He mutters more to himself than me, and without a glance my way, he starts running forward, "Come on."
As if I wasn't tired enough already, I run for my life behind an athlete. Have you ever run a marathon in sneakers larger than your size? Well, here's a tip if you haven't, don't! Your tired legs get further cramps, and your feet get blisters in places you don't even wanna know.
Finally, we reach a clearing. At the center rests, quietly and peacefully, a wooden structure of heaven.
"Yes! Let's go." My mouth forms a huge toothy smile as I see my means of escape. The only ray of hope in this jungle. I make a run for it when suddenly, Andre grabs my arm harshly, stopping me in my track.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"What does it look like? I'm going inside that cottage." I reply angrily. We don't know how many men are following us, I finally see a ray of sunshine, and he stops me from going in there. Couldn't he be any meaner?
"No."
"What do you mean no?" I ask incredulously.
"That's exactly where they'll look for us."
I cannot explain how monotonous and stupid he sounds right now. I frown at his deep-in-thoughts expression. A situation like this would normally recommend you being in a state of panic, but not mister robotic moron.
"You've got a better idea, hotshot?" I ask sardonically.
He looks at me through the corner of his eye. Turning towards me, he eyes me up and down as if measuring my size or something, and replies, "Yes."
"Well?" I raise my hands and ask him when no explanation comes out of that mouth.
Just as I thought my day couldn't get any worse, I hear footsteps getting louder. By the sound of it, it's quite evident that the footsteps do not belong to a few people, but instead, it's an entire group marching towards us like a part of the military.
I'm distracted by the sound of marching and I'm depicting my next move of entering the cottage when suddenly, something big sweeps me off the ground, grabbing me from behind my knees.
I let out a startled shriek as soon as I land on a shoulder, "Shh... Stay quiet."
I try to look at him and accuse him, scold him, but all I see staring back at me is a very sexy tight ass. Andre ass!
"Say that again and I'm leaving you behind, woman!"
My eyes widen as I realize I just disgraced myself. My cheeks heat up and I know I'm blushing profusely right now. Damn me and my stupid mouth for never shutting up!
"I'll keep on saying that if you don't let me down. I can walk on my own, asshole!" I accuse him and start pounding his back. A sorry ass excuse to get him to forget whatever I just said.
"That's the problem darling, we don't need to walk. This is not a movie scene."
"Argh!" I fold my arms on his back and pout when I realize he's not going to let me down so soon.
**************
"Why are we stopping?" I think loudly when Andre stops running and puts me on the ground.
"I take it you enjoyed the ride." He strides away like a perfect madman, leaving my embarrassed-self behind.
I frown at his words and turn around only to be met by a huge black cavern facing me. How he found this cave in the first place, is beyond me. All I could make out was him taking a few turns and viola! Everyone knows this forest is not meant for hiking without proper help. One can easily get lost here! And worst yet, be murdered! Which is our case right now. Serial killers following us and all. But the question is, how didn't he get lost? Moreover, how in the world are we still alive and not bitten by a deadly snake?
When Andre is out of sight, I run towards him into the huge cavern. I follow the echo his footsteps leave behind him in the darkness, with light steps. I'm only focused on not making too much noise with my steps. It's so dark in here that I can't even make out a single outline of the cavern, let alone looking at him and following him. I'm sure if I get even a bit loud, I won't be able to hear his footsteps and I'll be lost. Or worst yet, I might even hit a wall or something.
"Erm... Andre? Andre?!"
I call out to him desperately when I'm a few feet inside and I can no longer hear him.
That arrogant piece of nincompoop! I cannot believe he just left me here. He thinks he's so smart and good-looking and cool when all I want to do when I look at that voluptuous face is puke.
While I'm ranting in my mind, I search my clutch in the quest for my cell phone. Once I find it, I take the phone out and I turn it on. To my luck, the service is still unavailable. If you think like Andre, that I was dumb enough to not do that after the car broke down, then you've got it so wrong. The first thing I did was look for service, despite Andre's insistent babbling about something related to high frequencies and trees eating it and penetration and stuff... I didn't focus much on it because I felt like it was going somewhere I didn't wanna go.
Anyways, back to the present. When I first saw those eyes, even though they were as blue as the Atlantic ocean, and I wanted to bathe in them, I still knew something wasn't right. And now I'm a hundred percent sure he's got the genes of a bat. Otherwise, how can he see in this pitch-black darkness? There is no other possible explanation.
"Aaargh!!" I drop my phone and fall on my ass, appalled at the sight before me, as soon as I manage to turn the flash on my phone.
"You know, bats use an advanced navigation system called the echosystem, to avoid hitting an object. They don't have that good eyesight. So your theory about me having bat eyes is very illogical since they have weaker eyes, and my refractive status is quite normal."
Even his voice haunts me.
I grab my phone from the ground and hold the flash towards the thing I just saw.
Leaning against the wall is Andre. With his hands folded on his chest and his one foot propped up on a nearby rock.
"You were standing here the whole time?"
"Not the whole time. But I did manage to see your whole... Episode." He exaggerates with a gesture of his hands.
"God, I really need to stop doing that..." I mumble and bow my head. Quietly standing beside him, I say, "Well, follow the lead will you?"
He doesn't say anything and starts going forward, deeper into the depth of the darkest parts of the cavern. A place that will change everything. A place that will work its magic overnight...
