It was about 3 in the morning when it started. Kageyama was in a deep sleep and a dark dream. He could see that he was back in his room, cornered by his parents as they yell at him, berate him for leaving them.
'After all, we did for you!'
'How could you leave us?'
'We're your parents! You betrayed us!'
'You'll regret leaving!'
'That boy who helped you, won't be able to help you this time.'
'We're going to deal with him to make sure he can't help you.' they say to him and all Kageyama can think of is how they were going to hurt Tsukishima. It was his fault Tsukishima was in danger. His fault that they were going to hurt him, everything was his fault.
'No... please... don't hurt him, please! I beg you! He doesn't need to be dealt with. He's innocent! It was all me! Deal with me! Don't do anything to him Please!' Kageyama cries and begs his parents to leave Tsukishima alone, to take their anger out on him.
'We can't have him showing up while we're busy. Now can we?' His father says in his ear with a sickening smile that Kageyama knows refers to the acts his father alone does to him. Kageyama is frozen, fear of being back there, being back with the people who hurt him who he has realized didn't do it because he deserved it. But maybe he did, after all, he's going to get Tsukishima hurt for involving him. And what if it doesn't end there...? What if they go after the whole volleyball team. How could he live with himself if they got hurt, or worst because of him? He couldn't but he doesn't think his parent would let him live long after betraying them.
'Please, don't do anything to him... It's my fault, punish me. Hurt me, please don't hurt him.' He begs once again and his parents take a side step to reveal Tsukishima with similar marks to Kageyama's own. He stops breathing for a moment and it feels like his whole system shuts down, he can't think, can't process what he sees fully. When he finally starts breathing it is sobs and screams which transpire into reality, waking everyone from the Karasuno volleyball up.
"No! NO! Stop! Leave him alone! Leave me alone! Please!" He cries and is quickly crowded by his teammates who are prepared to wake him when he shoots up from the futon and gasps for air, coughing and tears running down his face like waterfalls.
"Yo! Kageyama! What's wrong?!" Tanaka, Nishinoya and Hinata yell, worried at the state of their teammate. Tsukishima just stayed quiet as he wraps an arm around Kageyama and rubs his back, hoping the contact would help calm him down.
"Kageyama-kun, take a deep breath okay?" Sugawara says as he sits down beside him and tries to guide him through breathing. Daichi sent Asashi to get coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei while the other second years went to get Kageyama something to drink. Yamaguchi was frozen, scared and worried but unable to move.
Tsukishima moves to hold Kageyama, gently moving as to not scare him. He wraps his arms around the shaking boy, rubbing his shoulders and arms. As Kageyama sobs stop and his breathing becomes less erratic, he begins curling up in a ball and avoiding eye contact.
"Hey... King, what happened?" Tsukishima asks and squeezes the raven's hand gently. Kageyama just shakes his head, not wanting to talk about it, at least not right then with everyone looking at him. Tsukishima understands and looks up to Sugawara.
"It's okay, you guys can go back to sleep, Tsukishima and I will take care of him," Suga says and although hesitant, the others follow directions and head back to sleep. Daichi is in the hall explaining what happened to the adults letting them know they have it under control but just to be aware and expect another incident. They head back to their room after checking on Kageyama by a brief peek through the door.
"Alright, let us know if anything worse happens okay?" Takeda-sensei says and Daichi nods. When he reenters the room, he just gives Kageyama a soft hair fluff before heading back to bed. Now with most of the members back to sleep, Tsukishima pulls Kageyama closer, only then noticing that he had fallen back asleep. Although Kei knew from the look on Kageyama's face that it wasn't the peaceful kind he had been getting since he became safe. He was unsure if this would be the only time Tobio woke up screaming that night but he knew there was a better chance of him sleeping through the night in Kei's arms. It's quiet for a long time, long enough Kei forgets Suga is awake and kisses Kageyama's head.
"Well, I see you two are on much better terms than we thought!" Suga says quietly with a smile. Kei blushes and looks to the side, trying to hide his face.
"I... I just... we... we're just doing what works best. Personally, it was just to help him calm down first but, he likes it and I... well I don't hate it."
"Heh, I'm sure you don't. Please make sure to be careful with him."
"I am, I will. I made the mistake of not being careful once. It almost cost him his life."
"Well, I'm glad you helped him, that you saved him. Even if you guys weren't on the best terms, because of you, he's safe." Sugawara says and puts his hand on Tsukishima's shoulder. "Thank you Tsukishima." He says and gives a small grateful smile.
"I'm just glad he doesn't hate me... even if I helped him... I put him in danger again... He, he wouldn't have gotten so badly injured if I hadn't pushed him away..." Tsukishima says and looks down at Kageyama who's face is scrunched up from whatever dream he was having.
"Maybe not but.... all that matters now is keeping him safe." Kei nods at Suga's words before running his fingers through Kageyama's hair and adjusting his embrace. "Tomorrow you guys should sit out. At least in the morning."
"I won't say no to that, but you'll have to convince the king that he should sit out from his life's source." He says and Sugawara chuckles knowing that would be difficult but sure with Tsukishima's help they would get Kageyama to rest. Sugawara helps Tsukishima get under the blanket of Kageyama's futon and to reposition Kageyama without waking him in a more comfortable position.
"Alright, try to get some sleep. If you need anything I'll be right beside you in your futon, just wake me." He says and ruffles both of their heads.
"Sugawara-san.... thank you... and... if you could keep quiet about... y'know..."
"Of course, but I think you guys should just be open with it. It would probably help Kageyama to be able to do those things with you when he needs them, no matter where you are." He says and smiles before getting into Kei's futon. "Goodnight Tsukishima."
"Goodnight Suga-san." He says and they both manage to get some sleep.
