I look at myself in the mirror as I wrap my hijab around my black hair. My mother says I'm beautiful. I don't know what I am.I've never fit in anywhere really. I mean, I go to a mutant school for the gifted but can it really be considered that if half of the students here are normies? Including me.
You see, originally this school was only meant for kids who developed mutant abilities caused by a specific gene in their DNA. Only around 5% of the population are mutants but the number is slowly rising. This school was built so they could train their powers in an environment where they could be themselves. However, after the events of the war that happened 10 years ago many wealthy parents pay a lot of money for their child to come to this school, even if they are 'normies'.
'Normies' is a term for people without mutant abilities. It might seem slightly derogatory but nothing compared to what some 'normies' call the mutants. Freaks and unnatural specimen to name a few.
The reason parents of normie kids pay so much money to send their kids here is because it's safer here. Our headmistress is really powerful and does her best to protect all her students. Our school is also well hidden and isolated from the rest of the world which makes it less likely for it to be caught in the cross-fire of another war.
What I meant when I said I never fit in anywhere is because I'm a normie but I shouldn't be. My dad, Hassad Afzad is one of the most famous mutants in history. He, along with a group of a few other mutants, managed to defeat an enourmously powerful mutant called Katastrofeas in the war 10 years ago. Everyone looks up to him and when I was born they all thought I would follow in his footsteps. But no, I'm a normie like my mom. I'm not a hero who was destined to defeat some evil foe. I'm just me and I hate it when people compare me with my dad.
Even though I'm a normie my dad didn't have to pay for me to come to this school. I mean, he's Hassad Afzad, Mister Speedjet himself, of course I would get special treatment and of course the whole school would tease me for it.
Don't get me wrong I do have some friends. Dorea and Laurin for example. They are twins who are a year younger than me, at 14 years old. Their parents were part of the mutant group that defeated Katastrofeas and are best friends with my dad. We knew each other since we were little and have been best friends forever.
I also have a boyfriend, Daniel, he's a normie like me and doesn't approve of me being friends with 'freaks' like Dorea and Laurin who are mutants. But I don't care what he thinks. My dad is a mutant and they are humans just like us. I always thought normies treated mutants so badly just because they were insecure and jealous of them. I know I'm jealous of them sometimes but that doesn't give me an excuse to treat them like crap.
Suddenly, I hear my phone ringing and I snap out of my thoughts. It's Laurin.
"Hey Lory!" I exclaim. That's my nickname for her and I call Dorea Dory. They hate it but I find it hilarious.
"Hii Fatima," she says and I can sense her eyes rolling behind that phone of hers.
"We're coming to your house for breakfast again if you don't mind. Mom and dad can't cook for the life of them," she said laughing.
"Of course, I'll tell Sofia to bring us more seats," I tell her.
"Thank you, I'll see you in a minute," she says and hangs up.
The 'Mutant school for the Gifted' is a boarding school but since the twins' parents and my dad are teachers here and are good friends with the headmistress we live inside the school. We both have houses a minutes walk away from the main building.
"We're here!" exclaims one of the twins as they come in.
I rush downstairs to greet them and give them a massive hug. They are only a year younger than me but they're both a lot shorter.
