This story is inspired by the greek story of Persephone and Hades. For those who don't know or are not familiar with the story here is a small recap:
Persephone (kore), goddess of spring and daughter of Demeter is taken away to the underworld to be queen. Hades, God of the underworld, sees Persephone picking flowers in a meadow, compelled by her beauty he takes her down into the underworld to be his new queen. According to the myth Demeter fights for Persephone's return from the underworld, even going as far as causing a drought to convince the other gods to save her daughter.
Persephone eats a single kernel from a pomegranate with entices her to always come back to Hades. Depending on the story Persephone returns to the mortal world for half or two thirds of the year, spending the reminder in the underworld with Hades. Thus creating Spring.
