Jake insisted on paying for the ice cream this time - or frozen custard, as the technicality seemed to matter to him - and Sammi just shrugged and decided to take note of the amount to pay him back.

Eighteen dollars and fifty cents - what? Okay how was two ice creams at Abbott's less money than two coffees at Starbucks?!

She vowed to never go to Starbuck's ever again. Or to at least make sure the person at the counter isn't asking for more money than was owed.

"I know what you're thinking," Jake said as they made their way to the outdoor seating, surprising Sammi by initiating conversation. "And no, you're not allowed to pay me back."

Had he actually just talked to her before she talked first?

Wow!

"You realize that's not going to stop me, right?" Sammi said with a giggle, and when Jake shook his head, the corners of his mouth had turned up a little. That was the first time his face had even resembled a smile! As they sat down, she said, "So, what's the deal with eating frozen custard and not ice cream?"

"I'm fasting ice cream for lent."

"Jake, it's not lent."

"I know. I do it all year round."

Sammi tilted her head to one side. "So then what's the point of Easter?"

"Christ is risen, hallelujah, eat some chocolate."

Sammi couldn't help but laugh. Jake was single handedly the most interesting person to talk to - um, besides Leah. Or was it besides Leah? Jake was pretty fun. But in a different way then Leah. Like, she like Leah as a friend and -

No, not going there.

"Essentially, frozen custard isn't ice cream and therefore does not go around my year-round lenten fasting."

That had to be the longest sentence he'd ever said to her.

And it did make her laugh.

It was only after a few seconds she realized he had laughed with her.

She looked over at him eating his ice cream, his thick black hair falling a little bit around his face. Now that it occurred to her, she'd never seen his eyes, at least not enough to pay attention or note their color. "...What color are your eyes?"

She wanted to smack her head. Had she really just asked him that?

He looked up, a little suprised - which was different than he had been in the past few days. He would ahve just answered and pretended it wasn't a weird question. "Green," he said.

Sammi wasn't sure why she was expecting to hear brown, but she liked green. Green was a nice color.

"I'm sorry, that was a weird question. I just... realized I didn't know."

Jake shrugged. "It's fine. I'm weird around you too." And now what did that mean?
