First and foremost, thank you for opening (digitally, obvs) this book! I'm so f**king stoked to be writing this and sharing the ride with you.

As stated in the intro, this story begins in 1963. I want to be VERY clear, this book is in no way glorifying, romanticizing or touting the Vietnam war. While I am enamored with the style and music of the era, which I hope comes through in the writing, this was an incredibly traumatic and complicated time in history-for MANY reasons. However, there were also many beautiful and profound things that sprung from this era. I hope to do both the negative and positive sides of the 1960s justice in this book.

There will be references to real events and places throughout the story, to which I will link articles at the end of each chapter (if you're interested in reading more about the history of said event/place). Another disclaimer I feel is important to make-I am writing this story through the lens of a cis, queer white woman. As the Civil Rights movement is a big theme in this book, I cannot write from a place of personal understanding of the kinds of discrimination and injustice the Civil Rights pioneers went through. I can only write from my experience of reading and researching as an outside observer, sixty years later.

While I will be referencing real events and places, this is a purely fictional book. There will be songs throughout the story as well, some of the same time the story is taking place and some that were released later (and in some cases like WAY later). The characters in this story are also fictional, though you may certainly recognize the actors playing each role 😉
