"My Soul Is In The Sky" - William Shakespeare
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Get up, little girl."
The light hurt her eyes, her back. It burned, blistered, destroyed. She dug her knees and palms into the gravel, the little rocks stinging her already bruised skin.
"I said get up!" An explosive pain in her side made her fall over on her side, but she did not cry out. She knew any sign of pain would only prolong this punishment.
She coughed, a metallic taste stinging her tongue. Blood.
"If you don't get up in five seconds, the next one will be to your head." She shook her head, shaking to get up off her knees. Her tiny calves shook under her until she stood upright, her bodyweight planted firmly into her heels. She wiped her nose, and almost flinched at the skin that came away red. Almost.
"There, see? You're fine. Now, what do we do when we're given an order?" Her chin was jerked harshly, and she looked into the unforgiving eyes of her uncle.
She shook, tears burning behind her eyelids. Her voice was small, a whisper:
"We follow it. But Uncle Danny, I don't want to stea-" Her head whipped around before his hand came in contact with her cheek, almost forcing her back to her knees.
"I don't want your opinions, little girl. You do what you're told, or it's the streets for you. Do you understand now?" She nodded fiercely, her tiny chest heaving with bruising breaths.
"Good. Now go to bed, rat." He turned her around and pushed her stumbling forward. She shuffled out of the room, flinching ever so slightly when her uncle closed the door behind them.
The dark hallway gave relief to her broken skin and sensitive eyes. The moon shone dully through a grimy window of the hallway, illuminating the stained walls and floors. The little girl breathed a bit better when she passed under the light, reveling in the wash of its cold light.
One day, she thought, one day, I'll be a hero, and save little girls like me from places like this.
She smiled inwardly, not daring to show emotion so rebellious around her uncle. The wings of her back ached to form, their fluidity rippling through her shoulders.
One day, she thought again(that was twice now, thinking about the future, in the same day!), one day, I'll be called Moonshine.
Moonshine the Moon Hero.
