"Robyn? What's up?" Rose asked as the woman who came to stand next to her in front of the sink and grabbed a dish cloth. "Might as well help my favourite neice." She said with a wicked smirk. Rose eyed her suspiciously. The tone she used was definitely questionable. Her suspicion grew when Robyn continued to flick water at her. When Rose went to confront her she either denied it or just stayed quiet.
Soon enough they were both splashing each other, to the point they had gotten water on the floor, the counters and all over their clothes. "What happened in here!?" Rose's mother came in from the dining room. She gave Robyn a scolding gaze before looking at Rose. Rose just smiled and giggled at her mother's expression. Her mom sighed and shook her head. "Honestly Robyn, you'd think you would be a little more mature than the eighteen year old." Robyn laughed and hugged her sister, a shout coming from Rose's mom. She yelped at how cold and uncomfortable the watery hug was. The two women laughed together.
"I'm gonna go get in the shower. Since I already kinda got half of one." Rose motioned to herself and chuckled. "Sounds like a plan." Her mother agreed. Before Rose went to the shower, she decided to head downstairs and check on the kids. They were both seated on the ground, playing with toy cars. Diana had a bright yellow beetle and Ben with a red pick-up truck and a bright pink bus that had monster tires on it. Rose grabbed the DVD off the couch and asked the kids if they wanted to start it while she was in the shower. The kids scrambled up on the couch and practically bounced up and down. Rose smiled and rolled her eyes at their enthusiam.
She pushed the DVD into it's place and the disk slot was swallowed by the DVD player.
"Alright kids, I'll be back in 10 minutes." Rose said and ruffled Ben's dirty blonde hair. He pushed her away but she ignored the guesture. She raced up the stairs to grab some clothes from her room and then made her way to the bathroom. The shower was just how she liked it; the temperature so hot to the point she would look like a lobster when she got out. Steam billowed from boiling water. It was like she was the water in a tea kettler. As she scrubbed the shampoo out of her hair she heard the bathroom door open. "Mom?" She asked. There was no answer. "Aunt Robyn?" She tried. Still nothing. She decided to look past the curtain and check who it was. No one was there.
Rose assumed that her mother or her aunt had come in to get something. She dismissed the thought and went back to her bathing. She shut the water off with a squeak of the shower knob. She grabbed her towel she had drapped over the shower curtain and wrapped herself in it. She stepped out of the cold ceramic bowl and into the bitter unknown.
She dried herself off and got changed into her favourite pyjamas. They were her favourite because, Lizzy had gifted them to her at Christmas and because they had little ducks on the pants. She smiled at her reflection. She went to grab her ring and her phone which she had placed on the sink counter. She stopped short. The phone was there. Her ring was not. She looked under the cabinet, beside it, even inside it. Then she looked to the toilet. She looked under, beside and inside. It was nowhere to be found. She grabbed her phone, slid it into her pocket - another reason she loved her pyjamas - and raced down the stairs. Her brown hair was still wet and ringlettes began to form due to the moisture. She ignored it, even when it started to soak through the back of her shirt - which is a terrible feeling, just for the record. "Mom!" She cried. "Mom have you seen my ring anywheres?" Rose asked desperately. Rose's mother peaked over the brim of her teacup to look at her daughter. She shook her head wordlessly. Rose's blood pumped in her ears. She looked at her aunt who had a glass of wine in her hand. "Did you see it when you came in?" Robyn's eyebrow raised in confusion. "I never went in there." She stated. Now Rose was confused. Then she remembered the two little demons in the basement. Her anxiety went through the roof as she ran down the stairs, ignoring her parents shouts for her to be careful.
"Diana!" Rose shouted as she stomped to the couch. There, on the plush leather seats, sat Diana. She had the ring on her puny finger. Rose grabbed the ring and put it back on her own finger. She was about to unleach all her rage and anxiety on the child when she remembered just that - she was a child. She was eight. She didn't know any better. Sort of...
"Diana." Rose started. Diana looked like she was going to cry. Rose sighed though her nose, calming herself and gathering her thoughts in a way that the dam in this demon's- sorry - child's eyes, would not explode.
"Diana, you know better than to steal peoples things." Rose said gently, getting down to the kids level. Diana nodded, her lip quivering.
"Do not steal my ring. Ever. I thought I lost it, I got scared." Rose explained. Another nod. Rose nodded too. "Okay, what do we say?" Rose prompted and the little girl mumbled a soft "Sorry."
Rose ruffled her soft black hair and went back to look at the screen. There was a large elegant ship. One that looked like it would be in fairytails and in classic disney fashion, it was almost all gold and white. Rose smiled at the work of art on screen. She asked the kids to move over so she could sit in between them. She didn't want any fights breaking out during the movie.
The ship looked 3D as the camera panned sideways. Rose watched happily. She had always loved animation and found it fasinating to examine the small details or hidden gems Disney would put into their movies.
As the story went on, the audience was introduced to the main character, Jim Hawkins. Diana smiled and giggled, she even squealed when Jim flew high up into the sky on his flying surf board - "It's called a solar-surfer." Benjamin had corrected when Rose pointed it out.
The attitude in the room is A S T R O N O M I C A L!
Rose thought to herself when the kids scolded her. A few minutes later Rose's mother came down and started to say goodnight. She looked at the screen and saw the lovely colourful images Disney provided and decided to stay for a while. It hadn't been much more than five minutes when Rose felt Diana poke her arm. She looked down at the girl and she shyed away at first. "What's up?" Rose prompted.
"Can I play with your ring again?" Diana mumbled guiltily. Rose gave her a serious look. Diana looked away again. Rose's mother scolded her. "It's just a ring dear, how much harm could she do?" Her mother said. Rose started to protest before her mother's tone became serious.
"Rose, you're acting like a child. You're eighteen, it's just a ring. Let her play with it." Rose sighed, fustrated but not stubborn enough to continue the arguement. She turned to Diana. "If you so much as scratch the band, I will throw you." Rose said, quiet enough for her mother to ignore. Diana giggled at the threat. "You wouldn't." She laughed.
Don't tempt me, demon. Rose thought and turned back to the movie.Ten minutes later, her mother had left. Rose was starting to understand Diana's attachement to Jim. They were watching a scene where Jim was helping an old Salamander creature into his house. It was raining and Jim's hair stuck to his forehead. He gave a glare to the camera and Rose cursed herself for the way she smiled at his angry eyes. Diana was smiling too. She crawled up to the screen and hugged the TV - at least as well as she could as the screen was flat and she had nothing to wrap her arms around. Rose rolled her eyes but the smile rested on her lips as she watched the child. She looked so happy and content. Rose almost felt guilty for not letting the child play with her ring. That was until Diana started to point a the screen and said things that made Rose's anxiety spike.
"Can we have a boy like that here? In real life?" Rose went to reach for Diana's hand where the blue gemstoned ring was. She tried to grab it casually so as not to make the child cry or get upset. It didn't work, at least not in before the excact sentence Rose feared came tumbling from Diana's mouth.
"I wish I was there!" She cried. Rose lunged for the child and the ring that had been in her fingers. She grasped her tightly as she watched her body slowly turn to blue sparks and dust. She felt Benjamin grab her shoulders tightly before she felt herself become tingly all over.
Terror, confusion, and fear filled all their senses until...
Everything was silent...the screen blank...the room empty...and the three unprepared guests now transported to an unknown world.
