Mezo Shoji's pov:

I didn't want to kill her. But I knew I had to. It's been roughly two weeks in the arena and there's been a significant lack of activity happening. Inside, I know there's no doubt the arena will be facing something tricky in the next week but I can't bear the thought. Personally, killing people was something I was against from the minute I heard my name being called at the Reaping.

Sitting in this damp cave was the last thing I wanted to do but it wasn't like I had another option to get away from the severe heat that was pummeling the ground with such intensity, a sweat was the least of your problems. Luckily for me, no one had been occupying it so I had no need to fight to inhabit it.

"Attention, all tributes!"

Looking up at the sky, I realised dawn was rapidly approaching when the incredibly loud noise sounded out throughout the arena.

"Today... is Feast Day. The Cornucopia will be replenished with food, water, medicine, and supplies, as well as memoirs from your family. There is one for each of you, rather than giving one per district. We felt particularly... generous with our gifts. We wish you a Happy Hunger Games. And may the odds be ever in your favour!"

The announcement went as quickly as it came. Feast Day? That'd be another bloodbath... but I was running low on food and water. There was hardly any way to get a suitable source of drink.

The options ran quickly in circles around my head, should I or should I not go?

The choice was clear to me. Either I run the risk of killing someone or I die here, of dehydration. Factually, I'd have a higher chance of dying if I went, but at least it would be over quickly. Dehydrating would prove to be painful and agonisingly long. Death would loom over me, taunting me with water, reaching out to me for days on end.

I wouldn't give in. I'd go to the Cornucopia. My mind was made up

Thirteen minutes later, I stood on the edge of the treeline, the Cornucopia within reach just 20 odd metres from my position. It was so close, I could taste the water from here.

The black drawstring bag with MS in large white letters stood out to me as it stood before the dark onyx structure. The sun wasn't up yet so I could easily get in and out without anyone seeing me.

Of course, I didn't account for all factors.

Taking a few slow steps into the clearing, my heart began to pound. I knew I was large, an easy target, but I'd be damned if I let someone get in the way.

Listening out for impending dangers, I heard nothing. But the soft wind that had been artificially produced by the Capitol. Of course, my footsteps were there but I tried my best to keep them as soundless and soft as I could manage. Treading on the soft yellow rock made it a lot easier to keep the sounds muffled. But it also meant I didn't hear the sound of my current enemy approaching from behind me.

A pair of arms curled around my waist and slammed me into the ground, dust picking up from the impact. Frantically I attempted to get them off but they wouldn't budge. I saw the bag within reach and made an effort to push my arm away from my body... but this only served my attacker the help they needed.

They took my wrist and flipped me over, pulling my arm behind my back while stretching it phenomenally, hearing the sound of my bones crack. The pain was so intense. I cried out. For myself, for my attacker, and for my family that I saw flashing before my eyes.

Knowing that there was a slim chance I'd be able to get out of this without severely hurting my attacker, I felt tears build up in the corners of my eyes.  Diverting my gaze, I tried to determine who my attacker was and why they went for me. Revenge for that girl I killed a week ago?
