DEAN
Dean's copper gaze focuses on Avery as she walks away. His predator prowling on the surface at the thought of his mate leaving his sight. A growl rumbles in his chest. His nostrils flare as her scent slowly disappears. He loses her in the club's darkness and the crowd of dancing people. He snarls, jumping to his feet.
"Easy. She'll be fine." Nick says, his fingers tapping to the beat of the music on the black tabletop.
"What aren't you telling us?" Dean all but snarls out at the three males as he sits back down. His wolf pushing at him. Something doesn't feel right to the Alpha male.
This world is not what it once was. Empaths were cherished, worshiped even when his family sat on the Wolf Throne. Lies and secrets are what has become of a once wondrous society.
His copper eyes shine from his wolf as he watches the emotions play across his pack mates' human faces. It's hard to hide their feelings in this form. The human face has so many tales.
Kayden pulls at the paper wrapped around his beer, a frown on his lips. His fear and aggravation is coming off of him in waves. It has Dean's muscles clenching with tension. He stinks too. Like a scared skunk. Spooked.
"Empaths are little more than slaves." Kayden mumbles and Dean shoots up from his chair. The force of the movement causing the chair to topple over.
It falls with a bang and he snarls. His human teeth lengthened into that of a wolf. He throws his arm out in the direction Avery walked off, "You let her go, knowing that!"
"Chill. She's marked. No one will bother her." Nick says with wide eyes.
Dean slowly sits back down. His eyes locked onto Kayden. Dean needs to trust the other male. After all, he is a part of Avery's pack. It's hard for him, though.
"Nick's right. She'll be fine." Kayden states, taking a sip of his beer. He stills smells like a skunk. Dean doesn't know if he believes him, but what choice does he have? He doesn't know this world Avery brought him into.
"She better be," Dean growls.
"It started about twenty years ago. It was done slowly, but it was done." Aden says, looking off at the dance floor, lost in thoughts of the past.
"It was volunteers at first."
Dean looks at Kayden. His heart still hammering in his chest.
"Come help the ones in the Rage. Help them and your family will want for nothing. The council said. Five years in we heard rumors of Empaths going missing." Kayden shakes his head.
"Then they demanded them. It's their right as the ruling families to have the Empaths they said." Aden scoffs. "What right is it? Just because an old jealous Empath caused the Rage doesn't give us the right to take them away from their families and turn them into slaves."
Dean's stomach sours at that. It was his mother's Empath that caused the Rage. Is this also his fault? If he would have stayed, fought off the Rage to make sure his people wouldn't blame the innocents for the sins of one man. Would their society still think this way?
Dean shifts in his seat as the muscles in his neck spasms.
"A Lot of the Rogue Empaths think they're being experimented on. Many of them go into hiding." Aden murmurs.
"Is there truth to that?" Nick asks, sweat beading on his forehead.
"Who knows? I wouldn't put it past The Six, not too." Kayden says.
Dean's had enough, heard enough.
"Hey! Where are you going?"
"To Avery." Dean snarls. His steps a prowling force.
Dean pushes his way through the sweaty crowd. Sometimes snarling and growling at people who don't move fast enough for his liking.
His eyes shine like a beacon in the night as he unleashes his alpha powers. The unseen force pulsing out of him in heavy waves, bringing everyone in the club to their knees. The music and whimpers are the only sounds in the room.
He stalks through the crowd on a sure footing, making his way to the hallway at the back of the room.
Deans snarls. His teeth cut through his bottom lip as he stares at Cam's body sprawled on the dirty hallway floor. His chest slowly moving with his shallow breaths.
His steps are silent, but the strength of them can are felt from every single person in the club.
"Oh, shit!" Nick shouts, rushing forward to Cam. He drops on his knees, reaching for Cam's neck, checking for his pulse.
"He's alive." Nick looks up and shrinks back at the vicious look on Dean's face.
"No!" Kayden growls, rushing forward. The bathroom door banging shut in his wake. A second passed before a howl echoes out. It causes everyone in the hallway to wince at the torment of it.
"Someone took her." Dean's words are muffled as his face is more wolf than human.
His eyes flick up to look at a broken Kayden exciting the girl's restroom.
Dean slams his fist into Kaydens jaw, knocking him to the floor. Hearing the bones crack, Nick growls.
"You said she'd be safe," Dean whispers, leaning over Kayden. "Where is she, Kayden?" Dean's head tilts to the side. His eyes glowing from his wolf.
Kayden mumbles. His jaw will take a few minutes to heal.
"Her scent ends here," Aden says, coming from the exit door at the end of the hallway.
"Why didn't I feel her?" Dean questions, staring hard at Aden.
A muscle in Aden's jaw flutters, "Probably for the same reason I didn't feel Cam. Aconite."
Dean snarls. "A poison."
"What do we do now?" Dean asks. Hating every word he just uttered. He doesn't know this world. There might be something he should do but not know about. Some action that needs to take place that he could overlook.
Aden growls, "I'll take Cam and Kayden with me. We'll check the cameras. You and Nick see if you can pick up her scent and keep trying the bond. It'll come back sooner or later."
Dean nods, sniffing the hallway and following the scent of winter, piss, and onions out the back exit door. Nick follows on his heels calling home. Jeff needs to know.
