Broken

Everyone has a breaking point, you just have to push hard enough to find it. Everyone has a point when they can't take it anymore. Even the cruelest people have a breaking point, and as Jacob watched the strongest person he knew fall apart over the death of someone she barely knew, he realized that the easiest way to break someone was to hurt the people they loved. You see, the easiest way to someones heart is to cut a path using pain. When you love someone, their pain is your pain, and without them you feel broken.

So many people had been lost during the famine. So many families had been torn apart. So many hearts had been shattered as others stopped beating. Jacob had been lucky, his family wasn't short on food like most families were. Marie, Jacob's best, and strongest friend, also had plenty of food. The difference between the two families, was that Marie's family shared their food, while Jacob's family didn't. Which was why the two friends were in the situation they were now. Marie's mother, Josie, had just died due to lack of food, and her death broke Marie. Jacob tried to understand her pain, but he couldn't bring himself to. It was, after all, Marie's families's fault that Josie had died. They had chosen to give their food away instead of survive themselves. The families's selflessness resulted in their own death, and deep down, Jacob believed that they got what they deserved. Everyone needed to learn that only the fittest survived, while the rest were broken under the harsh realities of the world.
