Chapter 4: Awakening

"Mr. Kruger?" You stammered.

He immediately went your side.

"I'm right here. Your wounds are healing quite nicely with the cream I applied to them."

You looked around. It was a dimly lit apartment, about as big as a closet. There was a bed, a refrigerator with a counter next to it, and a bathroom in the corner. There were no windows. He must have noticed your staring.

"They do not pay soldiers too well, sadly."

"Oh no," you said, "I am just trying to figure out how I got here." You lied a bit to protect him from being hurt by your obvious shock.

"I brought you here after you fainted from your wounds." He said, concerned.

"By the way, I still need to know who did this to you." He would not give this up.

"Why does it even matter to you?" You are genuinely confused on why someone is being caring towards you. He became enraged at this question.

"Why does it matter to me? Why wouldn't it matter? You are my friend and you are severely injured. If you do not tell me right now who did it, I will start assuming that it was every single person in this town." You shuddered at the threat. You knew he was dangerous when he wanted to be.

"It was my father. My foster father." You stammered.

The look on his face was a mixture between disgust and hatred. He quickly got his composure back, probably fearing that you would get scared by him.

"I see" was all he said.

"Wait. How long has it been? He will punish me if I am late again." You said anxiously. Your heartbeat started to race.

"You won't be going back there anytime soon. And when you do, I will be accompanying you." You are completely shocked by the level of caring that this man has for you.

"Right now we need to make sure you are properly healed. Then, I am going to train you to fight. That way you can defend yourself better for when I am not around."

You cannot imagine the punishment if you stay out longer than you already have. Between the growing pain from the wounds and the fear of your father, you faint again on the bed.
