There's going to be a chapter explaining the lore, but as for context!
Azdrin stole valuable items and lied about it, causing her to be set for execution. Alex (me) was sent to babysit her and while watching her took "pity" on her. They gave her a Spirit Locket, which allowed Azdrin to come back as a ghost. If you couldn't tell from the quotation marks, it wasn't actually pity. Alex just wants power over Azdrin, and makes her feel in debt to them because she so kindly gave her the locket.
