The incessant buzzing of the phone broke my peaceful slumber. I opened my eyes with difficulty, to find the kid sprawled on my stomach and his pillows on the floor. The screen was lighting with my and Jessica's picture. Hurriedly I picked up the call only to be met with familiar silence like always.
"Where were you, Jessie? Do you have any idea how worried I was? Why do you always do this? I thought something might have happened to you. So many bad scenarios played through my mind," I exclaimed, my frustration teetering on the edge of an outbreak.
"I'm fine, Aby. I called to let you know that I'll be on a trip. The chief has assigned me a mission, and I might have to go overseas. I need you to stay home until I get back, okay?"
"But why do you have to go?" I asked, frowning. I didn't like where this conversation was heading. I had prepared a speech in my mind, but she was taking it in a different direction.
"Just take care of yourself Aby and do as I say. Do you hear me?"
"Jessie, but—"
"If you don't have anything else to say, I'm hanging up." With that, the call ended with a beep, leaving me staring at the screen in disbelief.
Why are you like this, Jessie? Tears brimmed in my eyes as frustration washed over me. Jessie was like an ice block, only melting when absolutely necessary. The only time I felt her warmth was when our grandfather passed away.
She had hugged me then, her embrace soft and reassuring, promising she would always take care of me and be by my side. That was when I finally felt at home after losing Grandpa.
After losing all my people close to me I thought I would be alone. I thought I was cursed, but she proved me wrong and loved me. No matter what, I knew I could rely on her.
Ughh!! I even forgot to ask about the kid. Since it was curfew, I cannot even leave him in the police station. Next time I will. Wrapping the little one snugly in a blanket and placing the pillows beside him, I quietly left the room. I enjoyed a warm shower, taking my time to nurture my body, feeling my calm nature return. This was my second escape after sleep and food.
Once dressed in my warmest clothes, I headed to the kitchen, my mind set on making a delicious breakfast. As the minutes passed and the radio played softly in the background, I patiently awaited the dough for my cookies, buns, and breads to rise.
The cookies I baked reminded me of Lucas, the kid from the neighborhood who loved them so much he often ate until he had a tummy ache. Maybe I could borrow some of his clothes for the little one.
With that thought, I packed some cookies and buns into a brown paper bag. Lucas's home was just a five-minute walk away. It was a little late when I returned, but it was worth it for the bag of clothes I had gotten for the little one.
As I opened the door, I wondered if he had woken up, only to find him on the stairs, sobbing and bawling his eyes out.
"Little one! Why are you crying?" I panicked, seeing him in such distress.
As soon as my voice reached him, he froze. Rubbing his tear-streaked face, he carefully looked up at me before running into my arms. His runny, red button nose and wet lashes told me he had been crying for quite some time.
I kneeled to carpeted floor to be on same level with the him. Also for checking if there are injuries, but I was taken aback as he engulfed me into bear hug wrapping his tiny hands on my neck nuzzling into my chest.
