Over the next few days, you relate to Bucky everything that you remember about him and Steve Rogers. You feel grateful that you had visited some history museums before you had been kidnapped- the exhibits on Captain America were full of facts that you share now with Bucky.
It's hard to keep having the meetings with Bucky to tell him about his past without drawing suspicion. Too many times, you had heard footsteps and Bucky had had to quickly move into his guarding position by the door, slipping on the disguise of a hardened soldier like a well-worn glove. You're sure you'll be caught at some point, but luckily no one has suspected that their source of pride, the mind-controlled Winter Soldier, would ever be remembering who he was.
However, a few days later Bucky comes inside the cell just for a moment, to tell you that he was being shipped out on a new mission. He seemed more worried than usual, saying that they were sending him after Steve Rogers once more and that he would be mind-wiped just before the fight. You assured him that it would be alright, that he would remember who he was and be able to get help with his childhood friend. When he left, he seemed reassured, although you couldn't help feeling afraid for him. What if he only regained his memory after it was too late, and he only recognized his former friend when Steve Rogers was lying dead in front of him?
When he doesn't return for a few days, you know the worst has happened. You feel your own mantle of ice descending around you, making you immune to the regular everyday world. When the HYDRA operatives give you a new guard, you don't speak to him once. What's the point, anyway? He would just leave.
Although you don't want to admit it, you can't help but feel a pang of hurt in your heart that Bucky was gone. Yes, he was technically just another member of HYDRA, but you felt saddened over his loss. He was just starting to realize who he was, that he actually had a past instead of just being HYDRA's toy soldier. Now, his future was gone- snuffed out in a battle against his own best friend.
The weeks pass you by, one after another. Minutes blend into hours, and hours become days. Nothing changes in the cell, and you have no reason to believe otherwise. This was the life of a hostage- being held captive in a plain cell with no hope of escape.
When you first hear alarm bells going off in some distant corner of the building, you just keep staring at the ceiling. As a political prisoner, you'll be one of the first groups protected, thus ensuring that there's no way you're getting out of here. Although, the sound of panicked yells is growing louder, and even the guard in the corner seems to be getting worried. Whatever, no one knows about the existence of the cells, and those who would have the keys to save you are either dead or HYDRA.
When your door is kicked down, your head jerks up in confusion. Who is here? A second later, you see the face of your rescuer, and you let out an audible gasp of surprise. It's Bucky! He quickly takes out the guard in the corner, and then runs to you and starts untying your restraints. You look up at him in shock, still unable to believe it. "I thought you were dead!" Bucky just lets out a low laugh. "Trust me, I'm still alive. Now come on, we have to get out of here."
The two of you run through the hallways, dodging enemy agents and making your way towards an exit guarded by the unconscious bodies of HYDRA operatives. Bucky leads you to an armored car, and once the two of you are inside Bucky starts the car and the vehicle takes off. "I had to come back for you once I was safe. It took a while, but I finally managed to get the location of the complex. I'm sorry it took so long."
You can't help but laugh. "I can't believe I'm out- and that you're okay. I thought you died! No one would tell me what happened." Bucky grins. "HYDRA wouldn't tell you because they wouldn't want to admit that I got away. It took a few blows exchanged between Steve and I, but I remembered everything and we both got out of there alive. Ever since then, I knew I had to come get you. Without you, Y/N, there's no way I could have escaped HYDRA. I owe you my life."
You smile at him. "I owe you mine too. Here's to a life together." As the car drives off, leaving the HYDRA complex far behind you, you can't help but wonder what will come next.
