"We're fine,"

Daphne smiled, staring at her daughter, running her fingers over the cold window as rain splattered against it. Daphne turned more in her seat and rested her head against the headrest, taking her in.

Daphne would do anything for her children, but especially for Ariella because of the world she lives in. Daphne frowned at the thought of all the dangers coming Ariella's way when she first felt that connection to the rampant chaos in their veins.

Her eyes zeroed in on the crescent-shaped arctic blue sapphire crystal around Ariella's neck, glowing in the darkened night between her red hair like Daphne's own.

"I should've come with you,"

Daphne turned the car, leaving Ariella's school. "You promised Nadia that you would visit."

"She would have understood."

Daphne loved her husband, but sometimes he was stubborn, and Daphne was afraid it would rub off on the kids.

Daphne looked in the rearview mirror at Ariella, staring at the shadows of the raindrops on the car ceiling as Ariella entered her own little world.

"Daphne, it won't take long for her spies to learn about Ariella."

Daphne looked at the wet road, and a frown pulled at her lips. "I know,"

Daphne understood the fear in his voice and even felt it shimmer in her bones. But Daphne has been scared of her for her whole life. From the constant abuse, physical and mental, that she put her through. Daphne would protect her daughter from that as long as she could.

"Just be careful," He sighed.

A small smile graced her lips. "I will."

"I love you,"

"I love you too," Daphne said before ending the call.

Daphne put her phone in the center console and looked back at Ariella, smiling.

"Can we go get ice cream?" Ariella asked.

Daphne smiled at her. "Ice cream? But it's raining, starlight."

"You told me that's the best time to get it." Ariella reminded her. "Because the lines won't be long."

"I did say that." Daphne nodded. "Fine, but you have to do your homework when you get home."

Ariella jumped in her seat. "I will, mom."

Daphne turned the wheel as eerie stillness fell over her, and coldness filled my veins. Daphne gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white and looked into her side mirror.

Oh, hell.

A giant black wolf with molten amber eyes reflected at her from the window. Daphne could feel fear constrict around her heart as it beat loudly in her ears. Daphne switched her gaze to the red light before turning to look at Ariella.
