There was a shift in the air and then there was a sliver of dark violet light against the darkness. Then it grew into a pulsating and swirling circle. It was so bright that she had to turn her head.
She blinked a couple of times and then turned back just as Nyx stepped out from the tear in reality, dark violet mist swirling around her ankles. The end's of her black hair moved with a breeze that didn't exist, a trailing storm of shadows that writhed like snakes. The jagged portal behind her bled into the sky, hissing at the edges.
A girl followed Nyx through the rift.
The girl's bare feet didn't so much as crunch the dry grass and her posture was stiff. But it was the girl's eyes glazed over in a burning dark violet hue that wasn't hers that caught her gaze.
Because the girl was Valerie.
Valerie's curls flowed around her like she was submerged underwater. Her mouth moved, and it was devoid of an ounce of emotion.
