That night, we watched movies, and ate loads of popcorn. It was a great night, excluding the fact that my mom was acting very peculiar. First off, I asked if we had any Crangrape juice, (I've been drinking it since I've been three, don't judge!) and my mom shows up a minute later with it pored and everything. Then, during the movie I started laughing, and she joined in a little bit too late. Also, when she noticed my socks had a hole, she went to grab me another pair. All of these minor things have set me on edge. It wasn't normal of her. It was unsettling. Just because I'll be....leaving soon doesn't give her the right to act this way. I want it to go back to normal. I want to be a normal, sixteen year old girl, who reaches her goals and has a dad, and isn't going to d......
I was lurched into the present. My phone was ringing on my nightstand, blaring out to Alex Clare. I had a strange impulse to chuck it across my room, but I'd better not. I answered the call, seeing that the time was nearly 1:00. I never sleep in this long!
"Hey" I said.
"Willow! How are you girl?" I recognized Penelope's voice right away. It sounded different; foreign.
Almost like she was nervous of something...
"I'm doing good what about you?"
"Great!....well I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out today. It's Saturday, after all."
I tried not to notice her shaky voice. I'm the same person! I wanted to scream. It's me, Willow! It's not like I'm going to die on you for crying out loud. Instead I just said
"Awesome. I haven't seen you in forever."
"Great! Meet you at Jcpenny. Starbucks on me!"
"See you then, Penelope."
"-yeah you should see him." Penelope chattered on about this new kid at the high school. We'd already gone shopping at a million stores, and had a delicious iced latè. My best friend looked gorgeous as always, with her beachy brown waves and crystalline hazel eyes. Her sense of style had turned into a statement. I was so glad to see her, but it was like a glass wall was between us now. The fact of what would happen in a few months was like an upcoming storm. No one wanted to mess with it.
"Yeah he's smokin hot!" Penelope exclaimed. I nodded and tried to look like I cared. "I mean his face is like a model but, girl his butt is so cute!" I laughed out loud, forgetting everything for a split second. It felt good. Penelope unlocked her car, and we threw our bags in the back. When she started the car, our laughter had died down and silence consumed the air.
"So..." She started in a small voice. "I'm going to miss you."
I stared out the window. My chest felt tight.
"Willow, it'll be okay."
Even as she said this, I couldn't accept the fact that she would go on and find a new best friend when I was gone.
Minutes later, we pulled up to my house at the edge of the woods. Penelope sighed.
"I had fun today."
I couldn't form words past the lump in my throat.
"Me too." I finally choked out.
"We'll we won't want to keep your mom waiting or she'll never let me go with you again!" She tried to make a joke, but it just sounded pathetic.
I got out of the car and waved as her car drove off. An uneasy feeling settled in my stomach.
A faint breeze blew by, and I knew things were changing.
