(art by me)
okay just a little update for everybody (if there are still people who have this in their reading lists lol)
so hi. i'm Shy and i'm the author. i wrote this fic back in 2018, and it was not only the first fic i'd ever written, but also the first fic i'd ever published. obviously my writing and standards have improved since then, so this is...not what i would consider to be my best work. but i'm keeping it up because people seem to like it, and if i can entertain at least one person with my work that's enough for me. this is actually the only undertale fic i've ever made, fun fact. i haven't tried to write anything for/about undertale and its AUs since i published the final chapter to this book 3 years ago. so i thought, just for fun and as a thank you to all of you for reading this, i'd try my hand at it again.
so, here's an alternate version of your first meeting with sans, this time on the surface.
(y/n)'s POV
it's been about a year since monsters managed to get past the barrier and reenter the human world. truth be told, most of us didn't believe they still existed, but one day, there they were. apparently a human had fallen down and managed to free all the monsters with their determination, and (thankfully) managed to convince them not to wage war on everyone as soon as they got out.
obviously, people had their hang ups. these monsters were from a very different world than most of us humans. a very violent one where pretty much anything could be gotten away with if you had enough power. a real kill or be killed situation going on, apparently. but, after a few months the monsters managed to grasp the concept of human laws and the consequences for breaking them. that didn't mean everything was perfect, of course. there was obvious tension, and there still is. some humans could be (and still are) pretty discriminatory towards monsterkind.
i always tried to keep an open mind about it though. tried not to say anything offensive to them, be polite to any monsters that talked to me, et cetera. i figure that since they've been stuck underground for hundreds of years, the least i can do is be a friendly face. sure, they can be...quite standoffish at times, and rather prone to anger, but that's to be expected if you're suddenly put into a new place full of people that don't understand you.
so, that's how it's been. i don't treat monsters any different than i would another human, and most humans and monsters are doing their best to adjust to all the big changes. all in all, i can't complain. some monsters are still wary of humans, and aren't the nicest, but i know i can't let one bad apple ruin the whole bunch. there are bad and good humans, and it's the same with monsters.
but here's the good news. monsters have been cooperating with lots of government officials to discuss their rights, laws, and everything like that. so, it's illegal to commit a hate crime against a monster, establishments are required to serve monsters as well as humans, workplaces can't choose employees based on species, things like that.
speaking of work, that's where i'm headed right now, actually. it's my first day at this new cafe that opened up close-ish to my apartment. apparently some guy named Grillby has a pretty popular restaurant, and wants to expand his franchise. so, cafe. it's called The GrillBean (haha, coffee bean. Get it??), which i think is equal parts hilarious and groan inducing.
i glance at my phone to check the GPS, only to find that i haven't got any signal, so the map website is frozen. i sigh and stare at my phone, refreshing the page repeatedly as i walk.
and walk i do. directly into a wall. the dangers of being distracted by the internet are many. i stagger back, almost dropping my phone and rub my now stinging forehead.
"Oww! stupid piece of shhh..." i glance up, and-
oh okay. that is most definitely not a wall. that's a person- er, monster. skeleton monster. and a very tall one at that. this guy (well, i think they're a guy. with monsters it's hard to tell.) has at least a foot on me, with the top of my head at about his shoulder. well, i can see why i thought he was a wall at first. not only is he tall, he's also big. who knew bones could be that thick? almost like muscle...
"...hhhey." ah fuck. i might've messed up a bit on that one. great job (y/n), you absolute moron.
"sorry. you're uh...not a wall." i manage to say sheepishly.
the monster's annoyed scowl changes as he raises his...eyebrows? eyesocket-brows? just brows?? i dunno, whatever. the point is he looks surprised and mildly amused. he makes a small snorting noise and shoves his hands in his pockets.
"pfft. nah, definitely not. fuck are you doin' running into walls, though? or what you think are walls anyway."
"well, believe it or not i don't run into stuff very often. i just kinda wasn't looking where i was going because i was trying to get directions on my phone. i start a new job today, so i definitely don't wanna be late on my first day. sorry again!"
with that i start to resume my walk, turning it into a brisk jog once my phone finally starts working again. now that i finally know the rest of the way to work, i don't have to worry about smacking face first into anything else.
(A/N)-- i'm also starting a new undertale book, so if you have any requests for that let me know! check my profile for it UwU
