The demon gazed down at Levi with kohl-lined eyes and a sinful, scarlet-lipped smile. "You lost, soldier?" she purred.
The instant she spoke, an odd sensation settled over Levi, like a haze clouding his mind. He couldn't remember where he was, or how he had gotten here. He couldn't remember what he was supposed to be doing, but strangely enough, he didn't want to. His memories were too painful. His life was too painful. He just wanted to forget...just for a little while. And that rich, honey-like voice promised that he would.
"I...don't know..." he managed to reply quietly, his tongue feeling like lead in his mouth. Now that he thought about it, his entire body seemed halfway-detached from his mind, as if he didn't have full control over it.
But that was fine. He was too intoxicated by the haze – by that promise of forgetting – to care. He also didn't care when his cloak suddenly disappeared, as did the first few buttons on his shirt. He gazed up at the woman through half-lidded eyes, and as he did, he couldn't help noticing how soft her lips looked.
Soft...like Wrath's...
The woman's smile curled even further. "I can do more than make you forget, you know," she cooed breathily, as if she had read his mind. "I can take away all that pain, all that loneliness. I can give you what you've never had. Bliss. Pleasure. Release. All you have to do...is let me in."
Levi wanted to agree. He wanted someone to take his pain away. Yet, a small, dwindling instinct held him back. "I...I don't..." he muttered faintly.
"Shh," she whispered. "Let go, Captain. Wouldn't it be nice to let go? Don't you want someone to take care of you, just once?"
Levi swallowed. Yes, surely it wouldn't hurt if he let someone else take care of him – just once, just like she said.
But...hadn't Wrath already taken care of him? Yesterday, when she had put her arms around him, when she had given him a place to stay...and like a fool, he had rejected her. Why had he behaved that way? Why had he left? Wrath had made him feel better, hadn't she? All he wanted was to experience that comfort again...so much...
"It does sound nice," he whispered, thinking only of Wrath...of how tenderly she had looked at him...of how she was the most gorgeous creature he had ever seen...
"That's right," the demon breathed, leaning closer. "Don't fight it. Let me take care of you."
She placed her hands on his chest, arching into him, but he shoved her away. However, he barely registered the movement. His body was reacting on its own, responding to the single thought that broke through the haze of his mind. "I don't want you," he mumbled, stumbling away from her.
For some unknown reason that Levi didn't care to contemplate, all he could think about was Wrath. Wrath, with her long lashes and soft lips. Wrath, in the sexy black dress that she had been wearing the first time they met. Wrath, who had kissed him so thoroughly that he had forgotten his own name.
And the thoughts kept escalating. He wanted more of her. He wanted to kiss her again, and keep kissing her, and never stop. He wanted to feel her lithe and supple body. He wanted to...
Like a slap in the face, Levi was hit with images from the earliest days of his childhood. Of rough men, reeking of alcohol and smoke, doing unspeakable things to his mother. And then his mother's face was replaced by Wrath's. And then he was the man, looming over a woman who couldn't say no...
"No!" he cried out, dropping into a ball on the ground, gripping his head in his hands, his eyes filling with tears as he tried to banish the images from his mind. "No! Stop! I don't want to!"
