"Mai"
Her name melted into his mouth and he started to smile to himself.
'It's such a pretty name..'
"Den-kun.."
She's petrified in her tracks and her heart starts to beat so fast against her chest. A bit unsure if it's beating out of happiness..or out of fear
The two stare at each other for what feels like forever, looking at how much they've grown all those years.
Mai always wondered of the Fujiki boy who walked into her steps so long ago. She cringed at herself, knowing full well the marble given to her was well kept in a jewelry box of hers.
Denshi stayed composed but deep down, he too felt his heart jumping at her presence after so much has passed.
It was like seeing the princess stuck in her tower who then finally breaks free out of her own prison.
And now seeing her, up and personal..
It was something to behold.
"Umm, guys..hello?" The two snap out of their own minds and both turn at the same time to see a puzzled Miwa standing in between them now. Her hands snapping at their faces.
"Do you guys, like, know each other already?" She asks and Denshi looks at Mai, waiting for her answer first.
"I.."
Mai might have gotten out of that toxic household but she still was not free from them.
The real prison was in her mind.
The insults and being ostracized by her family plagued her mind. And her own damn twin sister leaving her...
She refused to be tricked again by another, especially the boy that to her, helped her find a small glimpse of potential in herself.
"Trust nobody. No ones ever going to care about you." Her dad echoes a voice in her.
"The Fujiki could never be allowed into our household. Even that damn boy, do you understand me?"
Her dad's growls and her beatings from that day still sends shivers to the bone.
Her shoulders slouch and she steps back, her hand pulled against her chest.
"I-I, why would I know him personally?" She says, sewing a serious stature of her own and Denshi looks at her with a slight gape.
"He's a Fujiki. He's meant to be an enemy, not an ally.." She starts to walk away and Denshi's eyes widen at her words.
"Mai, where are you going?!" Miwa cries out and Denshi leans forward, and tries to reach her hand.
"Mai, please, what's the meaning of this-"
Mai turns out and slaps his hand before he could grab onto her own.
The sound smacked through the room and even Mechamaru went back online to the noise, who then turned to see the three all clumped together.
Mai grunts to herself before looking at Denshi with fire in her eyes.
"Don't touch me like you know me! We only met that one time but that doesn't mean we're all buddy buddy, capiche?"
He looks at her with eyes of confusion, his brows furrowing further.
"Hey, I'm just trying to see what's going on." He says in a worried tone. "Are you really acting this way because of all those years ago?"
She stays silent and he continues to talk some more.
"Mai, we were just kids. You know we never did nothing wrong, right?"
She shakes her head, her voice almost cracking,
She doesn't turn to see his face but she can tell he was upset.
"No, no that's not why I'm acting this way!"
"Then tell me-"
'Because I'm Zenin and your Fujiki. Those two can never mingle with one another.' She thought to herself,
It's never been about that one incident..but it's the psychological abuse her family's cursed her with.
"Yeah Mai, just tell him!" Miwa chimes in.
The blue hair girl only said it because she was just as confused as Denshi was.
Also the girl grew frantic, worried those two won't cooperate on the missions to come.
'Oh no, I hate conflict..' She chews her nails out of nervousness.
"Miwa..I think this is something only those two should talk about. It seems a bit personal,"
Mechamaru finally speaks up, pulling her away from the heated duo she tried to butt herself into.
"It's okay Mechamaru, I was just leaving.." Mai mutters before storming off, pushing Utahime sensei out of the door way on her path out.
'She didn't even answer the question!' Denshi thought, loss for words.
He looked down to his feet, saddened by what just happened.
"Mai? Mai, come back here!" The teacher cries echo through the hallway but the girl never comes back.
She sighs before closing the door and settling her teacher's logbook on the table.
She puts a hand on her hip, looking at them with a huff.
"So I guess she must be really happy to see you, Fujiki-kun."
Miwa sweats drops,
"I don't think now's the time to say that, sensei.."
He sighs at that, a tingle of concern runs a lap around him for a while.
"Great, Is this really how my school semester is going to start?"
He muttered to himself, red cheeks come from embarrassment from their little spat.
"I wish mother hadn't allowed Gakunganji to drag me in this school now.."
At this moment, he felt like he wanted to go back home with his family.
But knowing Denshi,
The boy would remain curious and try to find ways to talk to Mai once again.
A short chapter but more will come soon this weekend.
