Teru Minamoto was not okay.
He should have known, should have stopped it, should have been there sooner. This whole mess was his fault and Teru was absolutely powerless. For once in his life, he couldn't use his looks and status to his advantage. All the blonde could do was watch in anguish as the one he loved died in front of him.
So no, he is not okay.
"Akane!" Teru screamed, dropping to his knees and grabbing for the other boy.
"Don't call me that." The red head replied, scooting away from the President. There was fear in his eyes as if he thought Teru would hurt him too. He had done so before with all that exorcist business, so why wouldn't he want to be the one to deliver the final blow?
Akane was scared. Akane was angry. He would die on his own, thank you very much, not by the hands of some scumbag who just used his pain to feed his ego.
"Akane, what do you mea—"
"I SAID DON'T CALL ME THAT." The dying boy screamed. "GET AWAY FROM ME."
Ignoring the little crack in his heart, Teru crawled closer and reached for Akane's face. Trying to dodge the hand, the former Vice President scooted back more. The dizziness had made his head feel fuzzy and blood was still seeping out of his stab wound.
Gripping the bottom of Teru's shirt Akane let him caress his face. The action was comforting, but still didn't change Akane's harsh reality that he was dying and the only person he had to hold onto was his senpai who wanted to kill him. (Now he would never have the chance. Take that, Akane thought.)
Akane wanted to hold Aoi's hand as he died. They would be old and happy, with kids and grandkids and a dog. She would be beautiful as ever and he would still love her. He still does love her, even if she was already gone.
The tears finally fell, and Teru held his closer.
There was nothing to be done, the person Teru wanted to spend his life with was going to die in the next few minutes. His hands were shaking, and soon enough, Teru was crying too. The things Akane had unconsciously been muttering weren't helping the tears either. About how it wasn't supposed to be him, how beautiful Aoi was, how he wishes it were her.
He would be with her soon.
Until then, what was Teru supposed to do?
"I love you Akane. I will always love you." He whispered. It was true, and Teru knew it was a futile effort, but reality was blurry and he had thought that maybe Akane would listen. Maybe he would get to hear that "I love you" he had been waiting for. Selfish is what he was, but Teru couldn't find it in himself to care. He knows that it's only a wish, that the red head still loves Aoi, but he needs to know.
Crying harder now, Akane let out a scream. This wasn't happening, he was dreaming, he'd wake up any minute and go to school and see Aoi and ignore Minamoto. There would be no more apparitions, no more deathly situations.
But it was true and it wasn't fair. Akane shouldn't be dying. And Teru shouldn't have professed his love.
Akane has always said forever about Aoi, and he wasn't lying. Teru was nothing more than a pest who knew how to use a sword. He would be okay once Akane was gone, right?
He didn't really care. And Akane still loved his beloved Ao-chan.
The blond choked down his tears. "I know I wasn't a good person, but we could've worked. The two of us. I love you. Just listen to m—"
"NO! No no no NO!" Akane interrupted. Looking up at Teru with watery eyes, still beautiful even in death, he continued. "Listen to ME Minamoto senpai. There was never an us. There was me and there was you. Never us.
This isn't some tragic love story, where I tell you I loved you all this time before I die. You shouldn't have waited for me. No one can wait forever, you know that. All of this is in your head, because I don't love you. After all I've been through, all you've done to me, you thought I would love you?" Teru was sobbing now. "Please go. I don't want to die in your arms."
Weakly trying to push the President away with one hand, Teru only held him closer. All was silent for a few moments until Akane took one last shuddering breath. With that, he was no more. Brown eyes covered by blood stained glasses were now lifeless, cold hands no longer gripping Teru's shirt.
Gently kissing the dead boy's forehead, Teru wiped his own tears and stood up. He hoped Akane would be happy with Aoi in heaven. One last drop fell onto his cheek, and the blonde turned to leave.
No one would know that he was there when the other died. No one would know that he had loved Akane Aoi. The former Vice President would have wanted it that way. It was for the best, the blonde told himself as he washed off Akane's blood in the bathroom.
He dropped his head into his hands.
Teru Minamoto was not okay.
