RORY'S CHEST IS STILL JUMPING WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT THE COMMON ROOM, STILL DRESSED IN SCARLET ROBES AND BEING GREETED AS IF THEY HAD ALREADY WON THE HOUSE CUP. Fred and George had disappeared momentarily, just to come back again carrying bottles of butterbeer, pumpkin fizz, and several bags of treats.
The common room, was bright red, enhanced by the flames and the burning desire to win from the Quidditch supporters (the whole Gryffindor house). The gold is brighter, almost shimmering and sparkling against the scarlet robes. The lousy ambiance seems to put everyone in the best of moods as they dance, joke and laugh. Everyone was enjoying themselves, letting their hair down and sinking with the rest of the cheerful hearts surrounding them.
Everyone but Hermione, who was sulking on her usual corner, hovered over a book bigger than her. And do not get Rory wrong, she is the first one to enjoy a book in the adversities of the mood established. But as she approaches her with two bottles of butterbeer, she decides that what Hermione needs it's a break from studying.
''Hermione, come on, you can't read now, we won!'' she exclaims handing her the bottle.
"Did you even come to the match?" Harry chimes behind Rory.
"Of course I did," Hermione replies in a strangely high-pitched voice, not looking up from the pages and trying to hold in a yawn that wants to exit her lips. "And I'm very glad we won, and I think you did really well, but I need to read this by Monday."
Rory shakes her head and rolls her eyes. ''I'll help you, I don't mind!'' she tries to pull her up, but Hermione is glued to the chair. ''Hermione, the amount of work you are doing can't possibly be healthy! Close the book come dance with me!''
"Come on, Hermione, come and have some food," Harry adds.
"I can't. I've still got four hundred and twenty-two pages to read!" Hermione's cheeks are swollen, her features drowsy and sloppy, bags more prominent than ever, and she yawns (again). "Anyway..." She glances over at Ron too. "He doesn't want me to join in."
''Who cares? I want you to join in!'' Rory shakes her shoulder, but the force seems to cause even more pain in Hermione's fragile bones.
Ron chose that moment to say loudly, "If Scabbers hadn't just been eaten, he could have had some of those Fudge Flies. He used to really like them —" (Rory rolls her eyes again).
And, Hermione burst into tears and before Harry or Rory could do or say anything she tucked the enormous book under her arm and ran towards the girl's staircase, sobbing madly. Harry tried to grasp Rory's arm as she quickly jolted towards Ron angrily.
''Oh, I'm gonna smack him so hard he'll be searching for his teeth for a million years!'' She's face to face with Ron, who doesn't look guilty at all. ''How is it her fault that her cat did, — well, cat things?'' (Ron said nothing — probably too scared to get on her bad side). ''Harry! Back me up!''
"Can't you give her a break?" Harry asked Ron when he caught up with Rory's strides.
"No," he says flatly. "If she just acted like she was sorry — but she'll never admit she's wrong. She's still acting like Scabbers has gone on vacation or something."
(Rory wishes she could go on vacation).
She bit her tongue and avoided Ron for the rest of the night, instead spent part of the party dancing with her fellow chasers and Alicia (who did her best with two bandaged arms). She didn't stay much longer, Rory wanted to go to Hermione. The last thing she was able to do was to receive some compliments from Oliver and some advice for the future (that she totally forgot when she buried herself under her covers and closed her eyes).
