The soft, glowing sun shining through the swinging blinds woke George from his slumber. He rubbed his eyes as he stumbled out of bed and into the living room where his friends sat, unable to unhook their eyes from the TV. "Morning." Usually, when he said this they would say it back. This time, it was different. It was very different. Who knew that there would be no more waking up out of bed to watch TV anymore? Who knew that getting fast food with his friends would never happen again? Who knew their life would change forever? Who knew? "Shush," Dream said as he adjusted himself up closer to the screen to hear the news. George scoffed and sat down beside the dirty blonde to see what he was so focused on.
"As of now, doctors don't know the cause of this virus. For everyone's safety, please stay inside your homes."
"What? What virus?" Dream sighed, wishing that what he was about to say was nothing more than a hoax, a joke, a prank maybe. It wasn't. What he was about to say was true. "Apparently there's some virus going around that's transferred by the infected person's saliva. The virus rewires people's brains, turning them into cannibals and makes their body decay quicker." George pinched himself, unsure if he was dreaming. "What is this? Some kind of zombie apocalypse? What the hell?" Dream looked at George, his face showing genuine sadness. "I don't know, George, but you guys can't go home. I can't risk losing you guys. We're going to stick together." A sad grin moved across George's face. Dream didn't wanna lose him, he cared. Sweet.

A couple of days after the news of this life-changing virus, they had lost their power. Sapnap and George started calling the people with the virus "infected", they thought it sounded cooler than zombies. Dream thought it was dumb, immature. Their lives were in danger by these things and they were naming them like pets. On the outside, Dream wasn't himself. He was colder, meaner. On the inside, he felt responsible. He felt as if he had to lead and protect his friends from what the world had become. There wasn't much left after the infected took over the city. About a week after the power shut off, they started to run out of food.
Dream stood in front of the couch to face his friends. "Look. We're going out there tomorrow. We have to. We aren't weak, dammit. We're going- and I don't give a fuck what any of you have to say." Sapnap sighed. "Yeah, you're right. We need to get supplies." George looked up. "I don't know, I- I'm just afraid. I don't want to lose you guys." Dream sighed and put his hand on George's shoulder. "I don't want to lose you either, but this is something we have to do. We can't stay in my house, we have to go out at some point." When Dream spoke to George his tone softened and his words were sweeter. It made George's heart melt seeing the change in Dream's mood when he spoke to him. George took a deep breath and nodded in agreement. Dream grabbed old backpacks from the closet and handed each of his friends one. "Go around the house and pack important things. We leave tomorrow."

Dream woke up early the next day so that they would be back before dark. They assumed that after dark was a bad time to be out. During the night hours, it sounded like there were more infected rather than in the day. They didn't know if that was the case, but they really didn't want to find out. "C'mon guys. It's time to go." The two other boys got up and threw on their shoes and backpack. George started hyperventilating, worried about the outcome of their plan. "Hey, you're gonna be fine. We are all gonna be fine, ok?" Dream's comforting voice made George feel better, safer. "Alright." Dream gave Sapnap a baseball bat with nails, George a machete, and took a kitchen knife for himself. He wanted to give his friends the better weapons, he cared about them more than he cared about himself.
He took a deep breath as he opened the front door to the outside world. Dust and ash filled the air. They hadn't realized how bad it had gotten. From what they could see, the whole town was demolished. Signs were torn down, mailboxes ripped from the ground, dead bodies strung out on the lawn. The three looked around, shocked at what the town had become. They slowly crept onto the sidewalk, looking in every direction. Dream turned around, looking back at his friends. "Alright, there's a small corner store about two blocks from here. I'll lead the way." He led them down the empty streets. It was sickening. With every step they took, a new horrifying sight met their eyes. He stopped at the corner of the street and pointed across at the store. He turned to his friends, opening his mouth to speak. "Aright, we stick together. We have to be in and out. Got it?" George took a deep breath. "Got it," they both replied.
They walked up to the door. "Wait for my signal." The friends nodded as Dream opened the door, ringing the bell. "Shit." He had forgotten about the bell, the one that most small stores had. The bell that alerted employees when the door was opened. It was alright, it was a good thing. He walked back out the door. If the infected had heard that bell they should come to the door. "If they walk up to the door we can fight them outside."
After waiting a few moments nothing comes to the door. "Alright, I'm going in." Dream opened the door, carefully walking in. He inspected the entire store before signaling to his friends that it was safe. They started grabbing loads of food, water, and medical supplies, stuffing them into their backpacks. Luckily, the store hadn't been touched. Was that really lucky? Why hadn't it been cleared? Had nobody made it this far? Had nobody been able to survive over here? If that was the case, how dangerous was this virus? "All done?" They nodded and walked out of the store.
Dream glanced over at what he thought would be an empty street. There, in the distance, one of the infected stood. They had never seen one in person. It stood there twitching. Its skin was a greenish color, it was wrinkly and moldy looking. Its hair looked like it had been torn out. It was an awful sight. Terrifying. George looked away, not being able to stare at the creature any longer. Dream shakes his head. "C'mon guys."
They followed closely behind him. Faint growls began to echo all around the three, growing louder and louder. Sapnap stopped in his tracks. "Do y'all hear that?" Dream looked around and continued walking after seeing nothing. Then, they saw them. About forty of the infected. "Shit! Run!" Dream screamed at the top of his lungs. They started running faster than they had ever run in their life. Dream turned back for just a moment to check if his friends were still following him. George wasn't there. He stopped. "George!" He looks behind Sapnap to see him lying on the ground, unconscious. He must've tripped. The infected were approaching George quickly. Dream ran over to George and lifted him up, seeing an open wound on his leg. He turned around to face Sapnap as he motions to run. Dream was a lot slower now, barely making it away from the hoard. They arrived at the house, quickly shutting the door behind them. The infected had lost them.
Dream lied George down on his couch. "Sapnap, bandages." Sapnap nodded and quickly reaches for the bandages in his bag, throwing them to Dream. He caught them in one sudden movement. "Everything's gonna be fine. You're gonna be fine." George couldn't hear him but Dream wasn't talking to George. He was trying to tell himself that George would be alright. He felt like he broke a promise to him. He had told him that everything would be ok. George's wound was deep. How did he get such a bad cut? A knife? Machete. He took off his shirt, using it to clean the blood off of George's leg then wraps the bandages around it. He, then, checked his pulse. Alive, slow, but alive.
"Sapnap, where is George's machete?" Sapnap stutters and looked around. "I- I don't know I-" "His machete. He cut his leg on his machete. I'm sure of it." Sapnap sighed. "You think he'll be ok?" Dream looks up at Sapnap. Without thinking, Dream expressed how he felt. He had never done that before. Yeah, sometimes he said that he loved George, which he did, but he had never expressed how much he actually did love him. "He will be, he has to be. I don't know how I'm gonna live if he isn't."
