Trigger Warning, Mentions of suicide

Hercule's death caused something in Nicolette to snap. She had spent so much time refusing to love or trust anyone as she had no one, but when she finally found someone to love, he was gone only a blink of time later. Instead of facing and dealing with the horrid truth of what happened, she created her own narrative as a way to cope. The story you have read was recovered from her cell upon her execution on June 10th, 1823.

The Léo from her tale was all a fiction. The truth was too hard so she wrote herself a fantasy. With Hercule died both her sanity and her will to live so when she was executed, she died happily. Marius and Léo were both in attendance. Léo was haunted by the sound of her laughter. It woke him in a cold sweat every night and instead of dealing with his issues, he threw himself into drinking. The alcohol made the voice go away.

Trigger warning

Eventually, however, it became too much and, after reading the paper recovered from her cell, he jumped off the same bridge as Javert.

Trigger warning ending

Marius spent the rest of his life with Cosette quiet and reserved. His hatred for Nicolette was drowned out in his pity for her. His final words were a blessing for her soul.

Sometimes the truth in life is too hard. Sometimes we create a fantasy to escape what we have to face. While it is far from healthy, it is a way to cope. This was Nicolette's fantasy.
