THUD.

the wooden panel flapped open with a loud squeak, sending you and mono flying towards the ground.

after regaining your balance, you both ran off behind a crate, hearing the hunter aim a bullet at the fence from his double-barrel shotgun.

"run to the next crate when he shoots this one, okay?" you looked at mono, who was trying his best to keep his composure. "how do we know he will shoo-"

BANG.

you let out a small scream as mono took your hand and bolted over to the nearest crate he could see, making sure you were right by him.

this happened over and over again until you and mono had approached a major dip in the land, giving you enough room to jump down and hide underneath the cover it had provided for the both of you.

mono let out a sigh as he instinctively wrapped his arms around your shoulders and pushing you further into the mini-cave, his back exposed to the outside - almost as if his first priority was to protect you.
"you still with me, y/n?" your frantic gasps made him tighten his embrace on you, trying to comfort you the best he could. "i-i think so..." your voice trailed off as you clutched mono's coat, seeing the huntsman walk past both of you, trying to find you once again.

his breathing was shallow and restricted, something about it seemed so familiar. something that made your blood run cold. "hey! it's okay, i've got you." mono's voice pulled you out of your small trance; he loosened his grip, causing you to already miss the warmth he had provided.

without saying anything, mono crouched down and held your hand tightly, making sure he wouldn't let go and lose you in the grass any time soon.

the satisfying sound of your footsteps sinking into the thick mud was mixed with the hunter's  scratchy gasps, causing a small but uncomfortable shiver to go down your spine as you continued to trudge forward, mono stopping you every now and then whenever the hunter looked your way.

eventually, a badger hole had come into view, mono glanced at you, thinking the same thing.

make a run for it.

the hunter turned his lamp in your direction once again; you felt mono stiffen from beside you, tightening his already hard grip on your hands. Your stomach churned and you gagged slightly, letting your nerves get the best of you. Your heart started to beat erratically; your skin slightly tingling from the anxiety building up in your stomach.

"oi!" mono whispered to you, his volume only high enough for you to hear, preventing the hunter from noticing you both.
he kept a firm grip on your trembling shoulders and his eyes bore into yours with anticipation, hoping it would distract you from the intrusive thoughts racing around in your head.

eventually, you had calmed down and mono had slipped his hand into yours, dragging you along. you noticed that you were walking by his side instead of behind, yet whenever you tried to move slightly behind or forward, you would be gently tugged back to your original place.

you hissed in a deep breath with each step you took that was gradually getting closer to the hole, your fingers had started to twitch in dread.
