Mono || ETHEREAL [discontinued]

0. prologue

you were alone. completely and utterly alone.

the darkness had pulled you in once again; a bittersweet taste played at your tongue, almost as if it were reluctant to give you the whole flavour.

nothing interesting had happened to you as you continued to relive the cycle you were placed in.

sleep... preserve your energy...
get some shut-eye.

"ahh~!" a scratchy scream erupted from your mouth as you woke up with a jolt, glancing at your surroundings. something was in the room.

"hey!"

a small voice came from in front of you, there was a boy - who looked around your age - holding out a hand to you. you blinked in confusion, slightly cowering away. it had been ages since you had seen another person, no wonder you had become so socially inept. "don't worry, it's okay. i won't hurt you, promise." his hand stayed where it was, he didn't plan on moving it any time soon.

you reluctantly took his hand as he gently dragged you to your feet, getting ready to catch you if you fell. "i'm mono. what's your name?"

y/n?

he nodded his head, tapping the area his chin would be if it wasn't for the bag placed over his head. "that's a nice name."

he heard that?

a soft chuckle escaped his mouth as he took your hand once again, leading you out of the room and up the stairs. you struggled to keep up with his strides, he must've noticed; slowing down once he realised you were tripping over. "are you ok?"

"haven't used my legs this much in a while."

he nodded in understanding, before continuing to walk up the stairs, going slower this time.

you both ended up in a room with a lock on the door; you immediately raced to the switch/lever (?) that was stuck from the ceiling, revealing a ladder.

"boost me. i might be heavier." mono walked forward towards you as you cupped your hands on a propped knee, nodding at him.

"thanks." he muttered as he was boosted into the air, grabbing onto the switch, swaying softly. you grabbed onto his ankles and pulled him down, causing the ladder to come undone and fall, a shoe narrowly missing mono's head.

a lord screech was heard from below you and mono pushed you towards the ladder, gesturing for you to climb it.

"hurry!"

once you were both at the top, you both worked your way to getting a key that had been suspended by a hook that was quite high up.

you had boosted mono up and over large drawer; you waited patiently, curling up into a ball, shivering slightly due to the low temperature.

"psst! oi!"

you stood up abruptly to see mono peering at you through the holes in his bag, tilting his head slightly. "how did you fall asleep so quickly?" you blinked in confusion before remembering what had happened.

"i fall asleep whenever i'm bored." mono nodded slowly, trying to understand how that worked. it was quite simple, but you assumed it was something he couldn't quite wrap his head around.

once you both retrieved the hook, you and mono climbed back down the ladder with you going first - ignoring his pleas.

"i don't like that sound." you muttered to mono, feeling him tighten his grip on your hand, caressing it with his thumb.

your cheeks were suddenly suddenly kissed pink like a dianthus; you had a tingling sensation around the area he caressed.

you shook your head softly, ridding yourself of the feeling and focusing on the main problem at hand.

you were both crouched down on a pile of clothes, hearing the sound unpleasant rips throughout the room. you shook slightly, tugging on mono's hand as he attempted to move forward. "i think there's someone in here." mono  glanced at you for a second, you could almost see his eyes from underneath his bag. "it's okay. i won't let whatever it is hurt you."

much to your dismay, mono continued to trudge forward across the wooden planks. a small squeak came from you when a large human-like creature came into view, mono didn't stop moving, only squeezing your hand when he felt you shake with fear.

you had both gotten to a wooden panel that could be moved, showing your way to freedom. mono looked at you, letting go of your hand to place them both on the panel, with you mirroring his actions.

"are you ready?"

you nodded.

3, 2, 1...
