MERLIN'S POV
I could barely sleep, the blood in my body coursing with adrenaline.
I had finally kissed (y/n).
And it was amazing.
It felt as if I were pulled in by a siren with no consequences. Her lips were the perfect amount of sweet and soft, but firm and intoxicating. I had only known this craving for a short time but I needed more. I had spent most of the night feeling warm and fuzzy.
By doing that the lack of sleep I had received by the time morning rolled around was NOT ideal. But the sight of (y/n) leaping into the kitchen that morning made the discomfort in my body simply disappear.
I perked up and smiled, watching at her (h/l) (h/c) hair brush against her cheeks.
"Merlin,"
She brushed it out of her face, revealing her beautiful facial features.
"Merlin,"
I rested my cheek against my palm as my eyes trailed down her face and to her gorgeous lips, which were curled in a beautiful close-mouthed smile.
"Meeeerlin.."
I couldn't wait to get her alone so I could crash myself against those soft-
"MERLIN!"
I jumped as the Frenchman behind me yelled into my ear. Turning around, I saw Jack leaning next to my shoulder with his hands behind his back.
"We can save daydreaming for another time. We need to prep," he nodded his head towards the door, then left, pulling his cape over his shoulders.
I turned around to look back at where (y/n) was, and as I did so her eyes flickered over before finally maintaining contact with mine. Her rested lips curled into a sweet smile, one that made my heart quiver.
"Ready to head out?" She skipped over to the coat hooks by the door, grabbing her cloak and pulling it over her shoulders.
"Now wait," I stood, frowning a bit. "You won't need your cloak anymore-nobody's after you. Plus, you're more recognizable with it on."
(Y/n) nodded and took her cloak off, leaving her with just her normal clothes. I had never noticed her combat uniform before, since it was always underneath her cloak. She wore a white cotton shirt, tied off with a black, firm leather corset. Her black skinny jeans donned a black, clunky belt, along with a utility belt, where her dagger was tucked away. She also had a quill pouch stored in the belt, and sturdy combat boots on her feet.
She had definitely been preparing for this for a long, long time. And she was ready.
"Shall we?" I stuck my arm out, to which she smirked and hooked her own around my elbow.
"Let's do this thing."
                              (Y/N)'S POV
                              "(Y/n)! Catch!"
I looked over to my left, where Hans was flinging an extra shield my way. I caught it, ramming my way into battle with it.
The ogre that had been reportedly attacking the town next to Rapunzel's tower had finally emerged again, and we found today was the perfect time to take it down. The ogre was known run into town and try to kidnap citizens. The town's security needed help quick,  but they kept him at bay long enough for me to redraw the maps from memory and plan the strategy with the boys.
With the shield in hand, I ran towards the large creature, knocking him down. The citizen he had in his large hands fell, and Jack ran over, catching the brown-haired woman and bringing her to safety.
The ogre grunted as he thudded to the ground, and upon impact I ran up his body and flipped off the other side, steadying myself for whenever he was ready to stand back up.
After a few seconds, he stood up just as I expected him to, then turned around to face me. With his large figure it took him a while, and in that time the rest of the Fearless Seven gathered around me, getting ready to defend themselves from whatever attack provoked against them.
But the ogre didn't attack us. In fact, he trudged right past us. I turned to Merlin, exchanging perplexed looks with him before turning to watch the creature and figure out what he was going to do next.
The ogre stomped away, and we all stood in silence as the world stood still, for just a moment.
Then the stomping began again. But this time it was even louder.
We all perked up, but whatever we had planned was completely thrown out the window.
The boys and I had planned for one ogre... not eight.
Screams from surrounding citizens began drifting away as they ran to safety. My legs went numb, and I could hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears.
Why did I think that I could do this? I was going to let this team down on the first try. This wasn't fair to them.
I guess Merlin could sense my fear, because as these thoughts jogged my mind I felt a soft touch against my hand.
I looked down to see Merlin's hand squeezing my own. When I looked up at him, my fear started to slowly fade away.
He nodded to me, giving me a reassuring smile.
"You've got this, (y/n). I believe in you," he said. "Remember what you're fighting for."
I took a deep breath and gave his hand a gentle squeeze in return, then turned to face the ogres.
"Fearless Eight," Merlin shouted over the commotion. We all took our mark.
"FIGHT!"
We charged towards the ogres, each of us taking one for ourselves. Heading towards mine, I leaped from his shoes to his elbow, and once the large monster reached my way I jumped to his opposing shoulder. While this movement distracted him, I pulled my black belt from my waist and slid down behind his head, wrapping it around his neck and pulling him down with a thud.
Ogres may have been large, but they weren't exactly smart.
As I heard three other bodies hit the ground, I turned to see that Pino, Noki, and Kio had taken out their designated ogres. Merlin appeared behind me, and I turned to see an electrocuted creature laying unconscious on the ground.
"Right then," he said, walking up to us. "Now we just wait for everyone else to make it through their ogres and we'll be all-"
Before he could finish his sentence, I could feel my boots lift from the ground. I jumped a little, then felt a strong set of fingers crush my body.
Hans yelled something out about not being able to stop something, and I was met face to face with the ogre who had taken me captive.
His hot breath felt as if it seeped into my skin, and I wriggled around, trying to escape.
"(Y/N)!!!" I could hear Merlin screaming from down below, but when I tried prying myself away from the monster his grip only got tighter.
I saw the boys try to get to me, only to be kicked and batted away by the other ogres.
I could barely move. It was getting harder to breathe. I couldn't reach my dagger. I felt as if I should have given up.
Then I heard Merlin's voice echo through my brain:
"Now... what are you fighting for??"
I could feel my blood start to boil. My head was pounding, but I used it as best as I could to focus.
I was fighting for the people of this town.
I was fighting for the Fearless Seven- no, Eight- proving I could be a good asset to the team.
I was fighting for Merlin, for everything he had done for me and the love I felt for him.
I was fighting for me. My strength. My purpose.
My freedom.
Suddenly, my vision blurred. Bright light seeped into my field of view. I felt the tight fingers release. Had the ogre let me go?
No. Not on purpose.
I felt my body float. My back tickled with the wind. My heart pounded and I felt as if I were... floating? I looked down at my feet. They were no longer held captive by gross green fingers, but they weren't on the ground.
I slowly turned my head. The ogres had stopped fighting and backed away in fear. The bright light I had been seeing was becoming stronger with every movement my head made to look behind me.
Wings.
I had donned bright, golden, beautiful wings.
My eyes went wide, and I gasped in horror. I quickly looked down at the boys. Their eyes were wide with emotion; whether it was fear or amazement or worry, I couldn't tell.
I locked eyes with Merlin. The reason for fighting that I was so determined for, standing right in front of me. He was one of the few bystanders that was amazed. I could see fear, of course, but his eyes were full of wonder at this new sight. This new creature that I had morphed into...
Wait.
My eyes darted to Jack's bright blues. I could tell he and I had the same thought.
I was brought back to the words Jack had said just days before:
"The prophecy is set to happen every hundred years to the second born child of the family, and the person can morph anything or anyone they choose, including themselves. Some ancestors have even used the power to give themselves special abilities, like flying or destruction."
Could... could it be?
"(Y/n), look out!"
I instinctively ducked at the sound of Merlin's voice, and the ogre's green hand swung over my head. I looked behind me and flew over to the group of ogres almost naturally.
There was only one way to find out if this was what I thought it was.
I turned my focus back on my reasons. Merlin's face etched itself into my vision as I closed my eyes, and I could feel the energy collecting in my palms.
I opened my eyes. In a blink and a flash, the ogres had morphed into eight small mice.
All the energy in my body escaped, and I could feel the wings on my back shrink into thin air.
"(Y/N)!" Merlin shouted, and I could hear his footsteps run towards me as I fell closer and closer to the ground. Mice feet scurried away as I landed in Merlin's arms.
"(Y/n)," Merlin's voice sounded baffled and weak, and he held me close to his chest as my vision went dark.
