The sun beams through his curtains and right on his beautiful face. His skin was a dark golden brown. He opens his eyes to his dog, a doodle mix of kinds, sitting on his chest. The pup is excited to see him half-awake, she jumps down, ready for their walk around the gardens. Their little morning routine.
"Okay, okay just give me a second to get myself together Soup."
Soup happily makes herself comfortable in the chair next to the window. Phillip opens the curtains releasing the bright new sun into the room. Phillip quickly gets dressed and prepares himself for his princely duties. As Phil and soup walk down the stone walkways of the garden they see a yellow spirit. Twirling and twittering around a red spirit. The land of Drogo has always been in touch with the land and the spirits that are left.
As Soup and Phillip make their way, they stop by the castle's east side for a bit of breakfast.
"Hey, little Phil! Hey Soup, how's my favorite girl feeling today?" The cook asked.
Soup just wags her tail happily as the cook scratches her chin.
"You don't have to keep calling me 'little Phil' I'm turning 18 tomorrow. You know that's practically an adult."
"I know, but I've been working here since you were in diapers," Bonnie exclaimed. "But I do have a special birthday breakfast for you two, y' know since you'll be doing you know what tomorrow," Bonnie said his voice cracking a little at the end.
Everyone knew what was happening tomorrow. Every prince's 18th birthday was the day they became a king. Every 18th birthday they would join the other kings.
"Do you think you're ready? I sure as hell wouldn't be!" Bonnie awkwardly laughs.
"I mean why wouldn't I be? I've been training since I was 5! I can probably take whoever on the east that's doing this blindfolded with my hands tied behind my back." Phillip laughs a little too hard at the end making him choke a little.
Soup whines as if to ask him if he's okay. Phillip pats Soup's head as he calms down.
"Do you need some water?" Bonnie asks with a little too much concern in his voice.
"No, I'm fine. Now, where's this special breakfast you made for us?" Phillip asked quickly changing the subject.
"Hold on just a tic," Bonnie said as he quickly darted to the back to check with the other kitchen staff. He comes back with the widest smile he could have, but it still couldn't hide the concern fogging his eyes. He cleared his throat. "So, my dearest Phillip. The rest of the kitchen staff and I have prepared something in your usual spot in the garden." Soup barks as if asking if it was for her too. "Of course you as well, Soup!" Bonnie said to her. She sits up as if proud to be included. "Now if you will just follow the balloons to the table-" Bonnie got cut off.
"What balloons? I didn't see any on my way here." Phillip said, his voice cracking a little as he pushed the last words out.
Bonnie rolls his eyes and opens his mouth to speak, but he is yet again cut off by Phil. "What trickery is going on here? Have you been working with the spirits again?"
"Are you done? Because you don't have a lot of time your breakfast is waiting." Bonnie said as his thick ginger eyebrows raised into his hairline.
Phil thinks for a second. "Yes I think so..," he responds looking down at the soup sitting there looking up at him. Soup barks agreeing with him. "Then yes I am done."
"Okay," Bonnie said excitedly, "now you go before everything gets cold," he pushed Phil back out the door where he came from. Phil laughs a little, but not too hard, as he gets through the door and onto the walkway, Soup not too far behind him.
He looks down the path and sees the row of balloons leading them and makes his way down the path into the garden. As they walk through, hiding in the bushes are peekaboos. They were hoping and weaving through the shrubbery, teasing Soup so she'll go after them. She looks up at Phill with pleading eyes. "Okay, okay. You can go after them just this once, but don't get lost like last time. We still need to make it to the table." Soup jumps up with joy, barking and casing the spirits through the path. Careful not to lose sight, Phillip walks slightly faster not realizing how close they are to the end of the path. "Soup! Come here we're already here!"
A slightly saddened Soup walks away from the peekaboos after almost catching one. As they reach, the table Phil sees it's set for two. He pulls out a chair with a pillow on it for Soup and she happily hops upon it. On the other side of the table, Phil sits wondering what's going to happen. There's no food, all the spirits have gone and hidden away, it's almost creepy how nothing is happening here. But then almost like magic turning the corner with a massive cart of food is Bonnie and Martha, his wife. Soup's mouth drops at the sight of it. "Hey! Glad to see you guys made it on your own!" Bonnie says pulling the cart next to the table.
"How could we, not there are balloons everywhere. But I'm more surprised you two made it with..that." Phil says gesturing to the cart. "How do you expect us to finish it?"
"Haha, ahh little Phil. The muscles are good for more than chopping wood and need dough. You'll learn someday," Bonnie says with a huge smile on his face.
"Oh shush," Martha taps Bonnie on the shoulder giggling, "just wait a few more seconds, Phil. You'll see why we brought all of this." And just like that people start walking out into the clearing, down the path, from the little nooks and crannies of the garden. Spirits start appearing out of thin air and place tables and chairs next to Soups and Phil's. Phil's eyes widen as big as the sun. He stands up and walks a few feet away from the tables closer to Bonnie.
"You have been working with the spirits again! Bonnie! You know you're not supposed to-" Phillip gets stopped by a gentle hand on his shoulder. It's his mom, Queen Blanchet.
"Phillip, it wasn't Bonthel's work with the spirits. I wouldn't let that happen in a million years, not after the last time." She looks over at Bonnie who is wrenching at the thought. Phillip let out a breath that he didn't know he was holding in. "Now let's stop dwelling on what happened in the past. The shows starting soon." With a smile, Phil nods.
The show is the best part of birthdays in Drogo. Humans and spirits retell the story of the day the kingdom started and how the Land of Drogo got to where it is today. Humans dress up in old armor and the ancient gather so all can be heard.
"Have fun," Then the queen slips away into a crowd to say her hellos and greet people.
"'Have fun'" Phillip echoes his mother."'have fun??'" He repeats over and over. Clear confusion crosses his face but is abruptly stopped when a soft voice pulls him out of his thoughts.
"Hello, is this seat taken?"
Phillip is snapped out of his thoughts. "I'm sorry what was that?" Phillip asks the young-looking girl standing next to his seat.
Pointing at the seat she asks again, "Is this seat taken?" Something in Phillip's chest lunges forward, catching him off guard. A girl is standing there. No more than 5'6", maybe 18-19 years old. She's pretty, there's no doubting that.
"Yes, but you can have it if you want. It would be in great view of the show." Phil said shuffling away slightly.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't know. See Queen Blanchet said to come over here. I was told this was the prince's birthday party?" The girl admits nervously.
"Oh...' Have fun'....'Have. Fun.'..." Phil says to himself out loud. At that moment he knew exactly why his mother told him that.
"Umm okay? I could find somewhere else to sit if you want?" The girl says slowly backing up.
"Huh? Oh no, no you're fine. This is my seat but the one next to me is completely open if you wanted." Phillip said hoping that she'd forget that he was just talking to himself. "Hey, umm, this might seem weird, but are you by any chance a princess or any type of royal?" Phil asks trying to confirm his suspicions.
See, his mother was never the "have fun" type. Before Phil went out she always said "remember your training", "stay strong", and "hold yourself up, you're a prince."
"Well yes actually. Not many people pick up on that. I'm Lady Ruby. From the middle island, Irene." Ruby did a little curtsy almost jokingly.
"Well it's nice to make your acquaintance," Phil said returning the curtsy, putting his hand on his chest and bowing a little, "I am Prince Phillip Blanchet the Third. Welcome to the western country Drogo of the Spirits."
