This story begins in a small beach town Laguna Beach in O.C. California. White sands and sun lit skies are bound all around everywhere the eye can see. Many come visit few move here. Its a beach bum paradise. I'm Julie, I was born in Detroit Michigan. Cold in the winter mild in summer. The crime rate was to high so my mom, single one, raised my two brothers and I and we all made it through life somehow. She worked two jobs while I mostly raised my two younger brothers. Max and Devin. Max was 8 devin was 9. My mom had us pretty close in ages so we were very close. Well that was the case until two years ago. We lost contact and he moved away and married, his new wife wasnt fond of him having close roots with his flesh and blood. So it was either her or us. He choose her. Which broke my heart more than anyone's. My mom remarried and found a guy off a dating site , never belived or had faith in those really. Any how she did and this guy was a jackass. He was very abusive and had rounds with my mother and I both. I was 19 at the time. Speaking of which I need to schedule that Mani pedi for my birthday next week. He wasn't nice whatsoever. Devin would always take to moms side and fought him off only to get a bloody nose. But to him, that's all he got. My brothers were tough as nails. We had a thick Irish / Italian roots strong in our blood line. They don't call us the fighting Irish for no reason. We have a temper but it takes a lot for it to burst. We love even hotter but that comes later .
I remeber one night, I came home from a high school party and finally heard the news she threw him out for good. I celebrated and was thrilled. She deserved better than that. Dad was the opposite though. Very loving and romantic. My mom had been swept off her feet from day one. We heard stories of how they first met. He was working at the local grocery story in Detroit and she stumbled in looking for a part time job while she was attending high school. He was smitten soon as their eyes locked. He was 17 a junior she was younger by 6 months. My mother, name was Sophia, turned in her resume and decided to grab some items while she was there.
My dad, Robert, was the checker she chose. S" hello how are you ?". He smiled and said " you stole my line, my lovely how are you this fine day? ". Her cheeks flushed and she turned away. R" I see your eating for one tonight? ". S" and how would you know that by looking at my items may I ask? ". He scanned the last items and bagged them very nearly in paper. She always refused plastic, even back then, the hippies knew plastic wasn't good for mother earth. R" a box of Mac n cheese, small gallon of milk and a piece of red velvet cake. That's a single woman's ideal meal ". She cackled in a playful way and said " I may have a man waiting for me at home.... You never know ". R" that will be 10.50". She gave him her 20 and he rang into the till and counted out her change. S" thank you, have a good..... ". R" let me have the pleasure of your company tonight dinner, I will pick you up at 6? ". She was floored, yet always had shown great self control. S" I have a class tonight, so, maybe tomorrow night? ". He looked at the customer behind her and then back into my mothers eyes and said R " stop by here at noon tomorrow have lunch with me instead ". She smiled and picked up her bags and said " see you then ". And walked out to her car.
From that very next day, they were like lifetime best friends, every word blended so easily between them. They dated and were together night and day. Never fought, or got jealous of each others friends male or female. Two years later I was born, I slept through the night and years later, my brother, then my younger one was last of the bunch.
We moved around Detroit a lot when mom and dad lost jobs or got laid off. Work was hard to find and even harder to keep when you had no sitters and low pay if you did find a sitter, you couldn't pay one enough to stay. We were rowdy kids especially devin and I. We caused so much trouble. Moms hair was grey in no time.
Today I remember all of this because, I was about to move away from my mothers home here at the beach. I yearned for more. I wanted more out of life. Big dreams. My biggest one was to be a medical surgeon over seas and help people who couldn't afford to be taken care of. It was expensive, but on the end it would all be worth it. And I could see the world and not have to be cemented down in one area for long. First day of medical school was in two months, summer was winding down. Soon my bikini days would turn to scarf and boot days. I was excited for the next chapter.
