Overprotective

The annual variety show was happening in three weeks. This meant they had three weeks to put on a show. It felt bittersweet as it was their last one and they'd been doing them since freshman year. River, Wren, Quinn and Ivy all sit on a desk as everyone sits in the music room. Richie and the music teacher Mr Rowan are stood at the front of the room. The dance teacher, Mrs Peters, arrives and stands with them.

"Okay so let's see what everyone is doing this year. Wren Uris and River-Cecelia Tozier, you two are going to be doing Bad Idea from Waitress and A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis." Mr Rowan says and River and Wren high five, both blushing. Richie stands, not looking very impressed. He knows how Bad Idea goes and he is aware of his daughters crush on Wren." Okay I have put down Quinn Kaspbrak for Dance With You from the Prom so I will need someone to sing Alyssa's part."

"I will!" Ivy says, raising her hand. She grins at Quinn, who smiles with a blush.

"Okay thank you, Ivy. I also have you down to sing I'm Breaking Down from Falsettos. River-Cecelia I would like you to sing She Used to be Mine from Waitress and No Good Deed from Wicked. Wren, I have you down for Soul of a Man from Kinky Boots. Quinn I have you here for I Love Play Rehearsal from Be More Chill." Mr Rowan lists and then he lists the others before saying the three big group numbers." This years three big group numbers are Love Thy Neighbor from The Prom, Just Be/ Raise You Up from Kinky Boots and You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen. Okay today, I will sing through your songs with you and tomorrow we will start staging."

"Hey, River." Wren says as they jump down from the table. River smiles at him but Richie is glaring at him from where he's stood talking with Mrs Peters." I was wondering if you were 100% comfortable with doing Bad Idea with me. Mr Rowan said last year that this year we were going all out and if we were required to kiss and...touch one another...we had to as long as we were comfortable with it. So, are you?"

"Yeah I'm fine with it." River replies with a grin. Wren smiles nervously with a blush." Are you okay with it?"

"Yeah I'm okay with it. It's not like we're doing Dead Girl Walking from Heathers." Wren says with a chuckle. River laughs loudly. Richie feels anger brewing. He doesn't like this one bit.

Richie was overprotective of his daughter and he knew he shouldn't be. Wren was a good kid and Richie knew that but he was so scared of River getting hurt. He didn't want her going through what he went through with her mother.  As they sing, they constantly smile and glance at one another and Richie gets more and more annoyed by it. He knew he'd have to deal with it though as he had to stage the performance.

2 weeks until the variety show

"Okay so, the first kiss is before the song starts. It's quite long so you will have to hold it for a while. Don't feel awkward. From the top." Richie explains with a sigh and a monotone voice. River smiles at Wren, who anxiously smiles back.

"So when we spoke on the phone, you said the bleeding was very mild." Wren says, holding onto the pie box.

"Yes." River replies, sitting down on what they were using for a medical bed, holding onto her purse. Richie watches, trying not to let his anger show.

"And that it stopped?"

"Yeah. I only saw it the one time." River replies and her accent is almost perfect. Richie had a knack for impressions and so River had tried her hand at some.

"Oh? Oh good. Then you are fine." Wren says with a smile, eating a little bit of the pie." Oh my god!"

"Aren't you gonna examine me?" River asks.

"Oh there's no need. Spotting is a perfectly normal symptom in early pregnancy." Wren states with a mouthful of pie. Richie watches and they're good. They're so good he can't stop the proud smile forming on his face. Wren takes another bite." Holy shit!"
