"Ugh...what happened?" croaked Jackson. "I...I...uh...ow!" His head was pounding. It felt like a drum, and his heartbeat the drumsticks. He tried to at least put a hand out so he could stand up, but soon found out that someone had tied his hands up. It was near pitch-black, and he could just see the cold stone floor of the room he was trapped in. When he stopped rustling around, he could hear whispering voices.
"Jace! Jace! I think there's someone in here!" said a feminine voice.
"Who could it be? Pray it's not Sebastian again!" boomed out a deeper, masculine voice.
"I think it's a boy!"
"Clary!"
"You know, I can hear you!" Jackson interjected. "Where am I? Who are you guys?"
"Jace! Turn the light on!" Suddenly, what looked like a small star flared up, coating every surface with a harsh white light. It all seemed to be coming from a little white stone. It slowly faded down into a light like a lamp. He saw who was also in the room, which was more of a dungeon. Jace appeared to be a tall, muscular man with golden eyes that had the sun inside them with hair to match. He was covered in weird black tattoos. Clary was short, lean and had red hair like an inferno with green eyes like a forest. She had the weird tattoos too.
"So," Clary asked, "what's your name?"
"Jackson. Jackson Morgenstern."
Both of their eyes widened. He quickly glanced behind him, afraid that Sebastian had come back. "What appears to be the problem?" Jackson asked.
"Um... my father's last name was Morgenstern. So is Sebastian's."
"Okay. That might be a coincidence, so I'm going to ask, what's a Shadowhunter and are you guys two of them?"
After untying him, Jace and Clary took turns explaining everything that had happened in their lives so far, including downworlders, demons, Shadowhunters, angels, etc. Jackson took his turn explaining what happened and his disorder, and how he just drank from the Mortal Cup.
Jace interjected at that last part first. "So you're a Shadowhunter now, and you have extra angel blood too! Clary, this isn't a coincidence. We might just be able to get out with him too!"
As if on cue, Sebastian opened a hidden door, and walked through. In his hands was what he first thought of as another weird weapon, but turned out to be an old fashioned writing utensil, like a wood-and-metal quill. In his other hand, however, was a long whip wound across a wrist holding a sword. "So, how was the family reunion?" Asked Sebastian, the sarcasm rich in his voice. "I hope I haven't missed out on the fun yet!" He walked over to Clary and Jace and spun the metal quill with a flourish. Jackson panicked, afraid he was going to hurt them with it. Instead, he placed it on Clary's shoulder... and DREW with it. It made another one of those of fancy black tattoos on Clary. When he was finished, Clary froze!
"What did you do?!?!" Jace exclaimed.
"A paralyzing rune. She will be fine," Sebastian calmly replied. "And if you don't let me do the same...I'll let you imagine," he said, waving around the whip. Jace angrily complied.
He finished, turning to Jackson. "Now now, don't even think about trying anything funny. I can't put runes on you when you're paralyzed, so I'll be more than happy to make you...comply. Today, you'll be receiving permanent runes. As a matter of fact, eight of them at once to account for your missed years.
"What do you mean missed years? And also, why are these two here? And what the crap is a rune?" He waved at Clary and Jace.
"Runes are symbols that we can withstand to boost our power, make us faster, and heal us. Shadowhunters usually start getting permanent runes around ten. As for the matter of these two, the three of you combined, once converted, will be invaluable to destroy the Shadowhunters. Now no more questions."
"What do you mea-" Jackson was quickly cut off because Sebastian cracked the whip across his face. The silvery metal left a nasty cut that wasn't going to be healing soon.
"What did I say about questions?!?!" Sebastian fumed, coming close enough to Jackson so that he breathed across his face. Backing away, he calmly asked, "What hand do you write with?"
"My left"
Sebastian then proceeded to grab Jackson's right hand and start using the quill-thingy. It left a burning sensation, but only for a little while. When he was done, there was a mark that looked like an eye. "This is a Voyance rune. It will help you see past most magic." He then moved to his left hand and started drawing more runes, making them swirl down his arm. He started counting them off.
He put Strength, Knowledge, Mnemosyne, Soundless, Mental Excellence, and Stamina. With each one he put on, Jackson could feel a different swirl of emotions, and kind of started to like this whole "runes" thing.
"And now, for the last." When he put the quill thing, which he said was called a steele, the ink came down as red. The rune started to speak to him of loyalty, and Sebastian, and servitude.
"NO!" He cried, "Stop with your tricks! This isn't funny anymore! STOP!" And when he said that, the steele flew across the room. Sebastian gasped.
"What did you do?!" He picked up the whip and was ready to make Jackson pay for his mistakes, but Sebastian had made one crucial mistake.
Jackson was different.
