Chapter 1

“Embrosia!” I screamed as I saw the-the thing charge at her. We were minding our own business at my house when my mom gave me an address to my sister in law’s house. It was weird because it was the address of the Delphi Strawberry Service. My mom never said anything about Hannah-my sister in law-working there. I thought she was a stay at home mom with my nephew, Abel. Anyway, we were just arriving at the strawberry place and were about to call my mom to get a double check on the address, when we saw it. It has nine heads for crying out loud! It was large and green and stood on four feet with NINE HEADS! Alright, so it was charging at Embrosia and she called it something that was definitely not nice.  I was here freaking out as I stumbled onto the top of the hill to get the monster’s attention. I hit something and it felt like hitting a wall. I looked back and there was nothing there. Strange. “I Percy Jackson, give you permission to enter camp!”

I heard a voice travel across the hill as I saw a boy emerge from the trees. He grabbed me by the shoulders and dragged me back. “You’re bleeding badly and I think you may have a concussion. We need to get you to Chiron, now.” I struggled, but his grip was firm.”Stop, you’ll only hurt yourself more!” Tears were streaming down my face and I could taste the salt, but I kept struggling. Embrosia was still down there. The creature had her in his hands and I was kicking the stranger to get to her. Couldn’t he see that thing! “Damn hydra. Don’t worry, it won’t get through the border.” he mumbled, only loud enough for me to hear. “Wait, what did you call that thing?!?” I was staring at the boy now with confusion planted on my face. My mouth was gaping open and my eyes were practically popping out of my head. “A hydra. It’s a Greek monster with nine heads, and spits toxic acid. There’s only one way to kill it” I looked at him expectantly. “What?” That was it, “WHAT'S THE ONE WAY TO KILL IT!” I very nearly spit at his face. He wasn’t looking at me anymore, his eyes trained on something I couldn’t see. I literally thought that my head was going to burst. What is wrong with him? I was so frustrated with this boy, I wanted to just-just

“Ow!” he exclaimed, pulling away from me and releasing his grip. “Percy what’s wrong?” I saw a blonde headed girl, about the same age as the boy-well Percy now, there was no denying it. I knew his name now. “I’m fine Annabeth, it’s just there is a burn on my arm.” Her eyes gazed up at the sky as her bottom lip began to tremble. “Percy, oh my gods but, have you seen Mr. D or upset him lately?” Percy furrowed his brow in confusion. “What? No, actually I haven’t seen him since I unpacked my stuff yesterday afternoon. Why?” Annabeth was letting a few tears slip out now.” Just look at your arm Percy!” He sighed and looked at at, his expression changing to one from a calm, satisfied look to one of astonishment and pain. ”What?” I whispered. I was getting fed up with all this lovey dovey stuff between Percy and Annabeth. I mean, it was obvious they were in some type of relationship, but I mean there is a monster HYDRA thing at the bottom of the hill. “Look.” Annabeth whispered, her eyes shifting from behind the hill, to the ground, to the sky, back to the hill. I peered at his arm, though I wasn’t too fond of blood. Or death. Or burns. Or anything that looked remotely gross.

He had a burn with a grape vine etched into it. I have to admit, out of all of this STUFF going on, this was by far the weirdest. Tied with the nine headed hydra at least. “So?” I mumbled. I mean, I may not know a lot of stuff, but I think that we should go fight that thing before it DEVOURS US ALL! Anway, Annabeth was staring at me with eyes that bored into my head. I’m sure that if looks could kill, Annabeth would probably be dead right now with this glare I was giving her. It practically took all of my willpower to not go after Annabeth and knock some sense into her. Annabeth wasn’t looking at me anymore, she was staring at Percy with loving eyes, and then she...she kissed him.

I gave up. I wasn't going to just stand here and watch Embrosia struggle to fight against a toxic acid shooting nine headed monster, while these two are acting as if they’re on the Titanic. Percy had been taking out a pen, but dropped it when Annabeth went after him and...you know. I picked it up while he was preoccupied and raced after the monster. Any kind of weaponry is better than no weaponry, even if it’s a pen. I thought blatantly. I raced back down the hill where Embrosia was grappling for her life as I clicked the pen to throw it at the hydra for his attention, but well, the pen turned into a sword! Given all of the things that have happened in one given day, I wasn’t really surprised. It actually felt, kind of natural in my hand now as I tried to angle the sun off of it. To attract the creature. And it worked.

The hydra hissed and let Embrosia breathe again as it dropped her, she probably broke some bones but I can’t help her if I’m not alive can I? I slashed through one of it’s heads and as it dropped d looked back to see Percy running towards me and Annabeth back to glaring at me. She put her hands up to her face and grabbed her hair in frustration. “You  i̱líthios! she screamed which I quickly translated in my head to-never mind. “What?” I countered angrily. This girl was starting to get on my nerves. “Every time you cut off a hydra head, two more-” I heard a sickening sound of something like velcro “What?” I said again. This girl was so annoying. “Two more heads grow back in it’s place!” Annabeth finished. I looked expectantly at Percy. “How do we kill it. You mentioned it before, how do we kill it?” Percy nodded quickly. “You kill the hydra by using fire.” “Great,” Annabeth started sarcastically. “Anyone got some matches?” she sighed.

“Wait!” Percy countered. “I know something we can try. “What if Annabeth went and got the cabins, and we could shoot flaming arrows, or something. We can try.” Annabeth pondered this for a minute, but caved in eventually. “Alright. Fine.”

“What’s going on?” I heard Percy groan. “It’s Clarisse and her big fat-” “PERCY!” Percy blushed. “Never mind.” “Camp Half-Blood , Attack!” It was the last sound I heard before I blacked out.

I woke up in a pool of blood and I heard someone scream. I recognized the voice. “Embrosia!” I yelled. My throat was raw but I kept trying to find her. She screamed again. “Embrosia, I will find you!” Strong arms lifted to me to my feet. “Can you balance?” I nodded. “Okay, now move backwards, now. You’re kind of in the middle of our battle with the hydra. That was when I came to my senses. There was blood everywhere, along with acid pools. I recognized Percy, Annabeth and Clarisse as I saw a wall of flame go up. As someone shouted, “All clear.” I saw the flames being doused out and the rest of the hydra disintegrating. There was a mob of brown hair coming towards me and I rushed towards it. “Embrosia!” I yelled in her ear but something was wrong. She was ice cold, and she wasn’t moving. Embrosia, I lifted her off of me and then dropped her. My best friend was dead.
