"Right, right, now let's skip to the part where you kill her." Darko interrupted Dennis' storytelling.
Dennis had spent the last couple of minutes telling us about the night he met Mary Louise, and I didn't have to be a genius nor a psychic to realize he fell in love with her from the minute he saw her. Alexander had stayed quiet the whole time, without an expression on his face, just starring at the floor. I wondered how he felt, and what was the rest of the story. I only knew some bits and pieces, and I wanted to know it all.
"I didn't mean to kill her." Dennis said, in a sad tone. Of course he didn't. I couldn't imagine Dennis killing anything on purpose, but then again, I had seen him do it with my own eyes.
"Right." Alexander scoffed, making a sound for the first time in a while. He was being ironic.
"Tell me the whole story, leave nothing out." Darko demanded in his eerie accent.
"I spent a while in Kadina with them, and as time passed, I began to develop feelings for Mary Louise." Dennis said in an ashamed tone.
"Did she lead you on?" Darko asked. Alexander looked at the mirror on the wall, visibly angry.
"She told me she had feelings for me, and I believe she even loved me at some point..." Dennis said, leaving the phrase unfinished, after a short pause he continued. "but she never stopped loving Alexander." Dennis admitted. I could feel the pain in his chest like it was in my own.
"Did she sleep with you?" Darko asked. Alexander used the little energy he had left to move in his chair, trying to get out. He didn't want to hear anymore, I could see it.
"Only once." Dennis admitted, ashamed.
"So, this Mary Louise you both love so much was nothing more than a cheater and a liar?" Darko asked. Both Dennis and Alexander reacted violently to the question, which was exactly what Darko wanted.
"Don't talk about her!" Alexander shouted, but it was for nothing.
"She wasn't like that, she told Alexander right after it happened. She begged for his forgiveness and she told him that she still loved him." Dennis said, trying to clear Mary Louise's name. I then realized that I had underestimated how much they both loved her.
"How do you know what she said to him?" Darko asked the same question that had popped into my mind.
"Because she told me afterwards. When Alexander learned about us, he told Mary Louise that he was going to kill me, and she managed to warn me before he did." Dennis explained. "She said I had to leave, and I told her to come with me. She said that if she had to choose between us, she would always choose Alexander, so she stayed." Dennis said in a sad tone, and Alexander's eyes opened wide. My gut told me Alexander didn't know about that part of the story, and it hurt him to know.
"I'm guessing you didn't leave." Darko said.
"At the time I couldn't understand why Mary Louise would stay in Kadina, and I thought that maybe Alexander was compelling her to stay there. I couldn't leave without making sure that Mary Louise was making her own choice."
"And how were you going to do that?" Darko asked.
"I was going to kill Alexander." Dennis said, and I frowned. "If a vampire compels a human, the minute that vampire dies, the compulsion does too." Dennis explained to me, noticing my confusion.
"Don't you think you were a little over your head?" Darko asked.
"I didn't care. I loved her too much to care." Dennis said, looking away from me. I didn't want to wonder whether Dennis could ever love me as much as he loved her, but I couldn't help it.
