As soon as we were out of the room Alexander started to look inside every room in that hall. All the doors were open, except for one. Alexander tried to force his way in, and it took him only a couple of tries. We both knew Darko wouldn't be hiding in a generic room so close to us, so I assumed he wasn't looking for Darko yet. He was looking for Jacqueline. And he found her. Once we walked into the room, we saw Jacqueline standing up on the corner of the room with a frightened expression. She was probably startled by the struggle to get in the room, but her expression went from scared to relieved once he saw it was us. More specifically, once he saw Alexander.
They ran to each other like it was expected, and they hugged. Alexander wasn't good at expressing his feelings, but I knew he had been worried about Jacqueline ever since he saw she was in here too, and I could imagine the relief he felt when he saw that she was okay. I imagined it was similar to when I saw Dennis.
Dennis! I had completely forgotten about him with everything that was going on. Or maybe I had purposely avoided thinking about him because I didn't know what to do. Was Dennis one of the bad ones now? Was Alexander going to kill him? What would we do with him once we found him? More like if we found him. There were too many question marks, and that was giving me unmeasurable amounts of anxiety.
"Jacqueline Wright, it's been too long." Victor said once Alexander and Jacqueline broke off their hug. Jacqueline had a big smile on her face, and so did Alexander. I had never seen either of them like that before. She walked over to Victor and planted a kiss on his lips. I was the only one that seemed a little shocked by the gesture.
"Where have you been?" Jacqueline asked Victor. I left the room. I'd had enough. I didn0t mind them catching up, but I needed to find Darko, and then Dennis. Or maybe the other way around. I wasn't really sure which one I should deal with first, but I assumed it would be the first one I'd find.
"Stella?" Alexander followed me outside.
"We need to go. Who knows what Darko is doing right now? For all we know he's finding a way to get out without us noticing, and we can't let that happen." I said. Alexander nodded.
"Let's split up. You and Victor cover the last ten floors, me and Stella cover the first ten." Alexander instructed the two vampires that were still catching up inside the room. Then he walked past me to the elevator. The hall was long and full of open doors now, and I knew Dennis wasn't in any of them, and neither was Darko. I had that advantage; I could feel it when Dennis was around.
Alexander got into the elevator and waited for me. I stepped inside and took a deep breath. The -20th floor was still highlighted by a red circle and I couldn't stop myself from going back to the moment we first decided to get into this elevator and come down to find Dennis. How stupid was I? Thinking everything would be okay and that I would find Dennis and we would go home to live happily ever after.
"Are you okay?" Alexander asked me, probably wondering why I was taking so long to press the button. He pressed the button that marked the -10th floor for me once he noticed my apparent paralysis.
"I'm fine." I said, moving some hair that was falling on my forehead away from my face. The elevator doors closed, and we started moving. A few seconds later we were on the -10th floor.
Once the door opened, we saw the same long gray hall full of doors. The difference was that this hall didn't end in just another door, instead, it broke into two halls, one to the left and one to the right. I looked at Alexander. It would take forever to check every room on every floor of this building. I sighed.
I had forgotten about one little thing that would help us a lot; vampire speed. Alexander checked every room on that floor in a matter of seconds. I stood still outside the elevator and watched him do it. I didn't like feeling useless, but my abilities didn't include super speed, so I stayed out of the way. After he was done, we came back to where I was standing, and he told me his findings.
