The world ended thirty years ago. Now everything that's left is a few survivors and a massive amount of Crimson Gluttons, but we know them with another name: zombies.
Mason is one of the survivors, and he has something that can end the end once and...
"Absolutely nothing," I hissed, coming out of the destroyed house already taken by vines and plants.
I hear a little cooing at my left, my little sister, Maya, was playing with a rusty nail and swinging it around like a sword. I walked to her and took the nail off her paws before she could cut herself.
"No, Maya," I whispered. "This is dangerous. We'll get you a toy when we make it to the mall, okay?"
She whimpered and crossed her little arms. She was only three years old, but it seemed like she could understand what I said. I grabbed the little baby carrier made out of cloth and duct tape and tied her on my chest. With a baby in front of me and a bag on the back, I started walking through the destroyed suburbs.
The suburbs were my favorite scavenging area. No one was around here anymore, and the resources I found were more than enough to keep us alive. And, as always, the Gluttons never came nearby this place. They may be dangerous but were very predictable as well.
The sky is grey from clouds and the fog in the forest is very dense, so I take my precautions before entering it, always on the lookout. It doesn't take a lot of walking to our base on top of the trees. As soon as we climb it, the wooden structure I put together was still at its finest.
I unwrapped Maya and closed the trapdoor. She instantly went to jump on her bed (which was nothing but an old mattress). The floor creaked silently, not loud enough to draw any attention to us.
I put all my things on the floor and took out the black outfit I was wearing. Not only gloves but also a swimsuit that covered my entire body, a black snowboarding mask, goggles, and the cloak.
I felt light and tired, but I couldn't give up now. I walked to my desk and marked another cross on the map. The options were getting scarcer and very dangerous from now on.

The only places left to explore were too much dangerous to take Maya with me, but too far to leave her alone in here. I kept staring at the map for a long time before I realized the creaking stopped. I looked back and saw Maya asleep on the mattress.
I got up and covered her with a smile on my face. Her orange fur, along with the kitten ears made her look like an angel, an angel that should've never been born in this shattered world.
Unlike her, I had no fur at all. My father was a Sphinx cat as well, and I got that from him. If we were in normal circumstances, I wouldn't mind this at all, but in these times, it gets people very scared. That's the main reason I wear an outfit that covers my whole body.
I sighed and decided I should get to sleep too. The sun was already setting, and we needed to wake up early if we wanted to keep on healthy. Today we didn't get almost anything, so we had to go back there tomorrow.
I lied down on a cloth on the ground. Until we found another mattress, I had nothing but the ground to sleep. The wood wasn't as bad as it seemed. The years made it rotten making it very soft.
