DANIEL

She began serving him him food with shaky hands. He was making her nervous. His presence was affecting her. The though stirred both bitter and sweet sensation in his heart. Bitter because she didn't want her to dread him and sweet because her nervousness devulged that she thinks about him. His plate was filled with a large portion of Sesame Chicken. His lips curved into a small smile on seeing that. The aroma of food brought water in his mouth and he couldn’t wait to dig in. He had this dish years ago when her mother had made it for him. He was definitely not regretting coming here. 

Ashley stood to the side of the table after serving food to Michael. “Dig in ,sir,” Michael threw a smile his way. Why was standing over there? Is she not going to eat with us? Daniel's attention drifted to her in confusion. She had her head hanging low. He turned back to Michael who had his whole attention concentrated on the plate. “Ain’t you going to eat with us?” Daniel finally voiced his confusion. 

Maybe, she was not expecting the question. The way she flinched made it all clear. Again, her eyes darted to Michael who himself had an annoyed expression. 

“Umm, she is not hungry. I tried to convince her but.... Come on honey, have dinner with us” Michael addressed her with a reluctant smile. He could see shock in her eyes. Was she not expecting these coaxing words from him?  “I ..I am good. I mean I am not hungry,” she denied in her weak voice. 

“Have dinner with us,” Daniel tried to sound cordial but his commanding voice ruined that. She again looked at Michael. What the hell was going on? “Yeah..You should eat with us,” Michael’s word sounded more like a warning. 

She scurried back into the kitchens and came out with a plate. Her eyes were still fixed on the ground when she moved to the other side of the table. She sat herself next to Michael who apparently looked unease. She hesitantly placed her plate on the table and began filling it with food. He couldn’t tear his eyes off her as she looked so innocent. 

There was an unsaid fear in her eyes while she scooped food into her plate. Fear of what? Michael was fiddling with his food.

Their eyes locked for a second when she looked up. Ashley looked away immediately. A lot of emotions dwelled in her eyes, fear and nervousness being the prime. He waited for her to start dig in. She hesitantly picked up the knife and spoon and started fumbling with them. Doesn’t she know how to use them? He wondered. 

Her hands were still trembling and eyes latched on the chicken piece she was trying to tear with her knife. She was holding them wrong. Her endeavours brought a smile on his face. Maybe that’s why she was so hesitant to join them. 

Daniel took a bite of chicken sesame. His eyelids shut down on their own as he savored the exquisite taste of his favorite dish. He had never eaten a food as delicious as this. All thoughts flew out of his mind the moment his tongue devoured the piece of food. The hunger roared in his stomach. He didn’t know anyone who could make this better than his mother. But this girl sitting befor him had definitely surpassed his mother. He opened his eyes to see her still struggling with her spoons. Her brows knitted together in confusion. She was looking cute. And then her knife clanged with the floor. Fear coated her face again. “SSS..sorry” she tried to suppress panic but that was too evident to ignore.   

A low chuckle escaped him. After a lot of efforts, she finally managed to cut herself a piece. Michael was turning red as his eyes were still latched on his food. “It’s delicious,” Daniel tried to break the tension thickening in the room. Ash gave him a small smile and turned back to her ordeal. 

“So, how do you handle so much work at one time?,” Michael began with the office talk. Dan joined in his chit chat but kept his replies curt as he knew Michael was nothing but a snake in green grass. He didn’t want him to know much about his work. The dinner went smooth. Dan kept stealing glances at her not knowing she had caught her a few times.
