Ash
Nights starred with agony
Days beamed with suffering
This is what he had promised her
In disguise of vows and a ring
She was least concerned about her physical injuries as it fades with time but the inflictions on her heart were what made life unbearable. Walking on her two legs seemed like an unrealistic task for her after what she was put through last night. Her husband was a monster she was cursed to spend her entire life with. If only she had seen his true color before their marriage.
Love was hurled out of the window a long time ago. Now hatred and frustration sat in its stead. Ashley feared him and he despised her. Despite their toxic marriage, none of them uttered divorce from their mouth. Ashley didn’t because she feared the outside world would be more cruel to her and she wouldn’t be able to fend for herself. Michael didn’t because he would not be able to find a slave like Ashley again.
This marriage had taught her a lot. For one, she had gotten better on patience and tolerance. She had realized that love stories and happy endings are meant for others not for hers.
Limping through the kitchen, she made his breakfast and rushed to iron his clothes. In the rush, she even forgot to tend to her bruises. There was no time for it.
Michael was shaving in front of the mirror when his phone rang. He looked as agitated as last night. In a huff, he answered the phone. “Hello…...Yeah I am fine….I don’t know what that fucker wants. I even threw him such an awesome welcome party…..Hmm….He needs to get off his high horse...the man is going to be a pain in the ass...yup see you,” Michael disconnected the call. Ash was listening in to his conversation and wondered if he was talking about Daniel.
She handed him his ironed clothes and retreated to the kitchen.
The feeling of loneliness was eating at her insides. She had no one to turn to in her low times. No shoulder to cry on. She had no one she could call hers. Ash had learned to keep to herself but sometimes just sometimes she yearned to have someone in her life with whom she could share all her miseries and pains. But that wasn’t the case a few years ago. She had someone who loved her for what she was. Mrs. Huntington, the caretaker at the orphanage. The old woman died six years ago leaving her all alone in the world. However, at that time she had Michael to endure her absence and it was precisely during that time they came closer. If only she knew.
Today she decided to visit her grave and talk to her. She might not listen but she needed to speak. She needed to take it all out or else she would go insane.
DANIEL
His heart ached when she walked away from him. It took everything in him not to climb out of his car and scoop her in his arms to make her sit next to him. He was already getting late for a meeting when he ran into Ash. He should have sped off but he couldn’t tear his eyes off her.
Her innocence was calling out to his soul. A chuckle erupted out of him when he caught her surprised expression on seeing his car. That was a sight to behold. That is why he offered her a ride but she declined. Not that he had expected her to climb in the instant but still he had hoped she would accept. He waited till she got out of his sight and zoomed to the office.
