Her eyes bulged out of its socket in shock and alarm bells started ringing in her head. The breath knocked out of her lungs and her face paled at the sight of the man she had slapped a few hours ago. Daniel was the last person she was expecting to see at her doorstep. The shock and unfiltered fear rendered her speechless and her heart started beating at an inhumane speed. Her mind advised her to bang the door shut. But her body paralyzed with fear failed to comply with the command. 

A few moments of silence passed between them before a deep voice penetrated it. “Can I come in?” Daniel asked what seemed more like a command to let him in. Ashley was alone in the house. Considering what had happened a while ago, she didn’t feel it safe to allow him in the house. “w..ww..Why are you here?” she stuttered, trying her best to hide fear and anger in her tone.

Her question prompted Daniel to slightly tilt his head and rub the back of his neck. He appeared uncomfortable and hesitant. After what felt like decades he finally decided to answer. His hands were back buried in his pant’s pockets as he stretched a little taller. “I have come to apologize,” he revealed. His brows knitted together as if this was the first time he had said this line. Could be. He is a billionaire, he doesn’t need to apologize to anybody even if he is the one at the fault.  

Confusion washed over her as her mind to process what he just said. Daniel Smith apologizing to a middle class married woman with no status. She asked him again, convinced she heard it wrong. I..I am sorry. I think I misheard you. Could you say it again?

Her confused expression caused him to clear his throat. “Can I come in? It’s a little uncomfortable here,” his eyes travelling to her neighbor's house. An old woman observing them with keen eyes. Ashley followed his gaze and realized having a talk at the doorstep will only make her a subject of gossip as the old lady was the famous rumormonger of her locality. 

Moreover, Daniel was Michael’s boss. Upsetting him more would mean being awarded countless whips at night. She couldn’t have Daniel taking out his anger for her on Michael as she knows her husband would vent all his frustration on her and that too in the most brutal way. A shudder ran through her body as the memory of her torture flashed before her eyes. 

But on the other hand, letting him in can result in some fatal consequences. She had seen lust swirling in Daniel’s eyes when he kissed her without seeking her consent and that terrified her to no end. What if he would try to force himself on her again. He is a man with a great physique and remarkable strength there was no way she can fight him.  

She forced a gulp down her throat while weighing her option. Daniel had picked up on her hesitance. Annoyance ghosted his expression as he spoke the next line “Don’t worry. I promise I won’t do anything that would make you regret your decision of letting me in,” sincerity shone through his eyes. 

It would be a lie to say that his words didn’t bring her a little assurance. She let her eyes wander at the old lady who had her eyes jumping from her to him in curiosity.

Hesitantly, she sidestepped to let him in. Once he was inside, she closed the door but didn’t lock it. She spun around only to find him already looking at her. “You want to something to drink?” she asked coldly averting her gaze yet again. She didn’t want to upset him any further knowing she would have to pay for it eventually. “No, thanks,” he replied while scratching his brow with his thumb. “I..listen...I am sorry for whatever happened this evening. I shouldn’t have done what I did,” he unknowingly took a step towards her prompting her to take a step back. He appeared restless to earn her forgiveness. However, Ashley didn’t let any emotion surface on her face. She was far from forgiving him. And it was not what he did that irked her but what he thought of her.
