Maxine Halstead

Chapter 2

Maxine's point of view:

I'm sitting in the back of the classroom and looking out the window. Mr. Gitton is babbling on about some math problem by the whiteboard, but I hadn't paid any attention at all.

I've always done pretty well in school, but math is one thing that I never understood. I mean, it's just a bunch of random numbers that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. And don't even get me started on when they started adding letters to the whole mess! Other than that, I don't really have much against school. I definitely don't love it, but I'm passing (almost) all my classes, I have some friends and no one really hates me. Except for a couple of teachers, some of the teachers definitely hate me. (One of those being Mr. Gitton.)
I don't misbehave or anything, I just speak my mind and don't tolerate injustice. I am not afraid of making myself heard. My best friend Emma talk a lot about how she admires my strength to always stand up for myself and others, but in reality it's not always a good thing since it causes me to get into a lot of trouble. Sometimes I wish I could just keep my mouth shut instead of standing up and cause even more drama. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of myself for not letting people walk over me, but Jay keeps telling me that I need to pick my battles, and I'm starting to think I should give that a try. My other brother, Will, is a lot like me when it comes to this. I can't even count how many times he's gotten into trouble at work for not accepting injustice.

Speaking of Will, just as I'm watching a bird land in a treetop outside the window, I get brought back to the classroom as I feel my phone buzzing in my pocket. It's Will.
Will: "You gotta be honest with me, is there finally something happening between Jay and Hailey?"
I roll my eyes at my phone, this is what he takes his time to text me about at work?
Me: "What makes u say that??" I reply.
Will: "C'mon I see things"
I wait to answer since I see that he is still typing.
Will: "We got a bet going, remember? You gotta keep me posted on our brothers life here!💦"
Me: "What's with the emoji?? Hahah"
Will: "What? Isn't that what you guys use? "Spill the tea" or something?"
Me: "nooo hahaha u can't use that emoji Will!!"
Will: "What?? Ethan told me!"
Will: "Shit, Ethan told me🤦‍♂️"
Will: "Remind me to NEVER listen to ANYTHING Ethan says EVER again!!"
Me: "Didn't I do that like last week?😂"
I smile and, once again, I roll my eyes at the phone.

"Maxine!"
Shit. It's  Mr. Gitton's angry voice calling my name. He must've caught me on my phone, which is something he does not like to see in his class, especially not when it comes from me.
"What have we said about texting in class?"
"Sorry, my brother's at the hospital so I had to take it" I say to my teacher.
I can see how Emma and a few others in the class, who knows that my brother is a doctor, are trying not to laugh at Mr. Gitton's facial expression after what I said.
"Oh don't worry, he'll be okay" I say, "I'll wish him your best!" I smile at Mr. Gitton.
My teacher doesn't get a chance to say anything else, as the bell rings and everybody starts to gather their stuff and leave the classroom.

"How come he still doesn't know that your brothers are a cop and a doctor?" Emma say as we walk out of the classroom.
"Because he only cares about himself and his stupid math problems" I say to my friend, which causes us both to laugh.

Me and Emma have been friends since we started middle school. We were paired to work together because our teacher thought I was speaking too much, and that Emma was too quiet. Emma is not as quiet anymore (which is probably my doing) but I still talk just as much.

It was definitely not my best but I am currently going through a lot in my personal life, which is also why it took me so long to get this chapter out. Because of this it might take a little while for me to get the next chapter out, but please bear with me, I'm doing my best.
