After three days of planning, preparing the tea, and running from grandma Martha, we were finally ready. First, I had to try to talk to her.

We found extra sticks, pieces of cardboard, and rope and constructed four shields to protect ourselves against any flying rocks that she might try to launch at us. I had already prepared the tea and poured it into a small container. I grabbed it off of the desk and gently tossed it into my makeshift pillowcase bag. Lilo helped me tie the end of the pillowcase to a long branch because there was no way I was getting close enough to get whipped with a spatula. I threw the pillowcase behind my back while balancing the stick on my shoulder. Just before I walked through the doorway, I grabbed my cardboard shield. I probably looked ridiculous but, looking weird was better than getting hit by rocks.

As we were walking, Arlo spoke up, "Now would be a perfect time for a motivational pep talk," he said. I opened my mouth to speak but, Lilo cut me off.

"No, Lani, Don't-" she started, I continued anyway.

"Be careful. Don't get hit," I said, smiling at the memory.

"Yeah, great. Now we are all bloody inspired." Newt replied. "Sorry, I just felt like I had to say it." We all laughed. It was so strange. Not too long ago, we were running away from Grandma Martha, but now we were marching straight towards her.

As we approached her house, I saw her glare at us through a crack in the poorly put-together wall. Then, she spun around, mumbling something that I couldn't make out. She had the whole building to herself because no one wanted to live with a crazy lady. Her shabby little house was so old that it was falling apart. An entire chunk of wood was missing, but none of the builders wanted to come and fix it. Talking to the deranged old lady was probably the last thing on their want-to-do list.

All of a sudden, Arlo started coughing and wheezing. It looked like he was having an asthma attack. Did he have asthma?

"Arlo! Arlo, breathe. It's ok, your ok." I said, trying to calm him down.

"I can't," He gasped. I had momentarily forgotten about the whole reason why we were here, the tea. I knelt down and quickly grabbed the tea out of the bag.

"Arlo," It was Lilo, "You have to drink it," He did.

Everything happened so fast that I didn't even notice Grandma Martha come outside and kneel beside me. When I looked up and saw her staring at me, I quickly jumped away. She pucked up the empty container and examined it. When she spoke, her voice was quiet, and it sounded strange because I have only ever heard her scream at us.

"What is dis?"

We explained everything to her. Apparently, she thought it was poison. She realized it wasnʻt when she saw it help Arlo, and she agreed to drink some. The next day I brought her a batch. A week later, she said that she felt better. She was very grateful and promised to avoid throwing things at as best she could. We were most likely going to get hit once in a while, but it was better than every day.

I had just gotten the news.

"Uh, guys? I have bad news," I announced. Newt spoke next,

"How bloody bad?"

"Bad," I replied.

"Well, what is it?" Lilo asked.

"Grandpa Pablo is back,"

I still haven't figured out how to indent 😣

The assignment was to write a short story about a native Hawaiian plant. I chose to do mine on the Ti Leaf.

I hope you enjoyed the story! Please lmk what you think!
