I stood there, listening to Bisky ramble on about the espresso machine and how to use it, only half paying attention. It was my first day of work, and I wore the required all black uniform with a red accent apron, wishing I could be back home in my bed, sleeping. The one perk of my job though was that we were able to make ourselves free drinks as long as the store was empty. And that morning it had been, so Zushi had made me a latte as a 'happy first day of work' present.
"Now running this machine takes focus and intelligence, neither of which you seem to have, so just leave it to Zushi and I, mmk?" Bisky concluded her long summary of how the espresso machine works, never missing the opportunity to throw in an insult. I couldn't think of any comebacks this early in the morning so I just nodded and rolled my eyes.
"Keep rolling your eyes and you might find a brain back there, kid." She slapped a hand on my shoulder, hard, causing me to nearly choke on my latte. I coughed and spent my energy trying to regain my composure but it practically flew out the window and into the streets of York New. Bisky walked off into the break room and I turned to Zushi.
"Is she always like this?" I rubbed my shoulder from the harsh contact earlier. She claimed to be 57 but with her young looks and powerful hits, I was skeptical.
"A ruthless bitch? Yeah, pretty much." Zushi laughed while mopping up some spilled coffee on the floor. I let out a heavy sigh. I was only about an hour into my first day and my body and mind already felt like collapsing in on itself. I prayed to whatever God was up in those clouds to send me guardian angel to save me from this working hell. In return, Bisky came back from the breakroom carrying a bucket of cleaning supplies and shoving it at my chest.
"The bathrooms. Go clean them, newbie." She pointed into the hallway near the entrance of the cafe. God, if this is some sick joke, I better not be the punchline in the newest chapter of the bible. I walked by Zushi and he gave me a thumbs up and large sarcastic grin. I replied with a middle finger and disappeared into the bathroom.Ten minutes passed and I finally managed to finish the two stall bathroom, and walked back out to join my coworkers.
"Did you wash your hands?" Bisky asked me, raising her eyebrows.
"Of course I did, I'm not a complete idiot you know."
"Hmm, then why do you make it seem like you are one?" I opened my mouth to retort but the door opened, causing me and Bisky to turn around.
"Welcome in! What can I-, oh nevermind it's just you." Bisky started. She seemed to know the stranger who walked in because she dropped her customer service facade.
"If it isn't my favorite old hag disguised as a teenage girl."
"If it isn't my least favorite little shit."
"Oh come now, I've gotta be at least your second to least-favorite." The customer had a hood on, so I couldn't see his face but his voice sounded familiar for some reason.
"Mhm, I take it you want the regular?"
"You know me so well~" He cooed in response. Bisky rolled her eyes and then turned to me. "Put a black coffee with two shots of chocolate syrup on the cash register like I showed you earlier, ok?" Then she walked off to make the stranger's order. Black coffee with two shots of chocolate syrup? How unhinged do you have to be to order such a thing?
"Is that it?" I asked, putting on my best customer service voice. The guy in front of me removed his hood, revealing a head of white hair and pale skin. Wait a second-
"It's you. The guy who pulled me away from that car yesterday." He looked at me with his piercing blue eyes, sending chills down my spine.
"Oh, you're the dumbass who doesn't know how to look both ways before running into the middle of the road, right?"
"I'm not a dumbass, I just... wasn't thinking."
"Ah yes, like that's not one of the many traits of a dumbass." He gave me a smirk and pulled out his wallet. "When did you start working here? I'm in this cafe every morning and I've never seen you here before." He handed me a five-dollar bill and I took it from him.
"Today's my first day."
"So you're new to working with the old hag? Hah, good luck, her employees never last a month."
"Hey! I've been here two months!" Zushi called from the sink.
"Can it wanna-be sushi-roll, I didn't mean you." He waved his hand dismissively and Zushi sighed, returning to his work.
"I've dealt with worse, I can take it." I shrugged and he raised his eyebrow at me while still smirking.
"Oh, is that so?"
"Sure is." He scoffed and looked over towards Zushi.
"I give it a week and a half." He called, voice a little louder so Zushi could hear him.
"Hey wa-" I tried to speak up but was quickly cut off.
"I give it two weeks." Zushi replied, not looking up from washing one of the blender cups.
"Care to put money on it?" The white haired male said, moving his eyebrows up and down. This caused Zushi to perk up and walk over to us, drying his hands on his apron.
"Please, I'm a broke high school student. Of course I'll waste my money on a dumb bet!" I was about to interject but was cut off again.
"Twenty bucks?" He asked, sticking his hand out to Zushi to make a deal.
"You're a coward. Make it thirty and you have a deal."
"Deal." Zushi locked hands with him and they firmly shook, sealing their bet. Bisky walked over and handed him his drink.
"Hey dip shit, don't be chasing away any more of my employees," She said, putting her hands on her hips.
"Oh Bisky, you're doing a fine job of chasing them away yourself, you don't need my help." He gave her a sarcastic smile and winked, and I half expected to witness his murder at the hands of my boss.
"You're lucky you're my most frequent customer or I'd toss your ass on the street."
"You're lucky you're the only cafe who will make my order right, or I'd leave and never come back."
"Are they always like this?" I whispered to Zushi who was now standing next to me. He nodded and patted my back.
"You'll get used to it." He whispered back.
"So rookie, what made you work here?" The boy said to me, taking a sip of his strange order.
"Well, I just moved to the city and I was in need of a job, that's pretty much it." He slowly nodded.
"And you chose to work here of all places. You really are a dumb ass." He scoffed and took another drink of his coffee.
"I'll have you know that this cafe is right across from my apartment, so it's a matter of convenience. And I'm not a dumbass."
"Sounds exactly like what a dumbass would say..." He trailed off and I crossed my arms in annoyance.
"And that sounds exactly like what a douche would say." I heard Bisky and Zushi both stifle laughs before the white-haired boy stared daggers at them, silencing them both.
"Don't make me regret saving your life," He put his free hand on the counter and leaned closer towards me. We stood still, glaring at each other for about ten seconds before Zushi muttered something under his breath.
"Jesus, the sexual tension between you two is so palpable I could cut it with a knife." This caused both of us to turn our attention to him.
"I could cut you with a knife, pip squeak." This earned a terrified squeal from Zushi as he ran into the back room for safety. The boy shook his head back and forth slowly, before running a hand through his hair and sighing. He was still leaning in close to me, but was looking down at the counter. I decided to make conversation.
"So, how long have you lived in the city?" I stepped back slightly, regaining some sense of personal space.
"Why, you looking for a tour guide to show you around, newbie?" He looked up at me slightly, with a playful grin on his face. I shrugged.
"Maybe. Why, are you offering?" I raised my eyebrow and returned a smirk to match his energy. He grew a slight blush on his face and looked a little taken aback by my comment, but the expression quickly faded, replaced by a sly grin. He scoffed slightly before taking a sip of his coffee.
"Christ, Zushi was right about you two. I'm leaving." I had totally forgotten Bisky was standing behind me, listening to our entire conversation. I turned around to look at her as she walked off to join Zushi in the break room. When I turned back, the white-haired boy was leaning even further over the counter, making heat rise to my face.
"So," He reached down to my shirt and pulled at my tag where my name was scribbled in green letters. "Gon..." He pulled back, letting go of my shirt. "Exactly how much of the city have you seen?" He took another long sip of his coffee, waiting for my response.
"Pretty much just this block." I tried to calm myself down, still slightly flustered.
"I know damn well I didn't save your life just for you to be confined to this block."
"And here I was thinking you saved me to be nice." He scoffed.
"Hardly." He pulled out his phone and looked at something. "Shit, I've gotta go." He mumbled before turning around and walking towards the exit.
"Where are you going?"
"Hell, most likely. See ya around, dumbass." And with that, he opened the door and walked away. I didn't even catch his name. I stood there, watching the door, reflecting on the exchange I just had.
"So, when's your date?" The sudden voice startled me, causing me to jump and spin around to see Bisky and Zushi both sticking their heads out of the back room.
"I'm not- we're not- it's not happening."
"The way you're stumbling over your words is very convincing, ya know." Zushi said, walking out from where he had taken shelter. I once again moved to slap the back of his head but he quickly ducked, making me swat the air.
"Ooh, too slow champ. Try again next time," He flicked me in the forehead and walked past me.
