Mia stayed up throughout the night with her arms hugged around her knees, laying against Klaus's chest while they sat listening to the fire wood crack.
After her emotional purge, she didn't have enough energy to even talk. Klaus promised to stay by her side, that was what he was doing. He didn't push her for discussion, he didn't try to offer hospitality. He just sat down with her.
"When is the guilt gonna go away?"
Finally, Mia spoke up after hours. Her eyes were locked watching the fire, reminding her of all the burning houses and buildings she set.
"When I'm going to stop feeling sorry for myself? When is it gonna get better?"
"It never does. Redemption isn't real," Klaus said honestly, "at the end of the day, you only find closure in other people's forgiveness so you can stop feeling pity for yourself."
"But if I.. if I can't forgive myself, I'll just–" Mia sighed loudly, "I'll fall into this empty darkness of depression and with these heightened emotions it.. it's impossible to move on."
"As time goes, you won't forget what you did, but you'll come into terms with your past and make way for your future," Klaus looked down on her, "that's what we do. We keep moving forward."
Mia glanced towards him, seeing his smile comforted her, and she felt better knowing she wasn't alone in this.
"Klaus, what I said in New Orleans.." She trailed off, "I can't take it back and I can't say I didn't mean it.. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."
"You don't have–"
"And.. I-I slept with Kol behind your back and I know we weren't together yet, but with the whole Kara history–"
"You weren't yourself," he interrupted her, raising his eyebrows, "despite your own perspective, the Mia I know wouldn't even let Kol near her. If you could see yourself through other people's eyes, you would agree with me. Those without humanity are never themselves. Take Kara for an example."
"I still hurt you," she moved off of his chest, facing him, "I hurt you when I promised you I wouldn't."
Klaus tried to hide his smile upon hearing her words. He was more than happy to have Mia back home. Although her actions stung his heart, he wasn't focused on that right now.
"So we move forward," he replied with a smile, "and we make better memories to overshadow the bad. Speaking of which– you said we weren't together.. yet?"
Mia rolled her eyes and laughed, falling back onto the couch as she covered her face from embarrassment.
